I had a Proton (v2, I think) for a while and never quite bonded with it. The main issue for me was that it always seemed like the envelope wouldn't trigger properly on the treble strings. Sold it to a bass player and he was very happy with it.
I'll throw in a vote for the Mad Professor Snow White Auto Wah, which gets closer to a "proper" wah sound than any other envelope filter I've tried but can also be set for wilder stuff. Very useful range and relatively easy to dial in regardless of guitar and pickups. Really solid pedal, but it's not a Mu-tron clone so it doesn't get mentioned all that often.
For the Mu-tron sound, I always really, really wanted to try a Prophecy Sound Rubber Fetish (a tweaked Mu-tron). But I don't think they make them anymore. And I would sell both of chankgeez's kidneys for a Glou-Glou Rendezvous.

I really enjoyed my LWA Acetylene Nirvana until I broke it like a dumb ass. It's an Oberheim VCF / Sample and Hold Clone. Only five knobs. SOUNDS GREAT (Sounded?)! The enclosure is large enough so that I can add two expression jacks (1. Frequency 2. Speed) once I figure out how to do that .

I wouldn't pay for it brand new. WAY TOO MUCH MONEY. I got mine for $150 which imo is about right for an Oberheim / Maestro clone. I can give more updates once I fix mine but it really is a great sounding filter.

I'm sure the WMD Protostar has been mentioned. Great pedal but not cheap (and rightly so...they really thought that thing out).

Anybody mention the Funk-a-Duck?

I was on an envelope filter quest for a long time. IMO The Mutron III really is the king. It's the most even in terms of triggering it across strings, and the easiest to control the amount the filter opens.

It's expensive though. If you can find a (real) MXR Envelope Filter that is my favorite runner up. The Proton and Neutrino are solid, and there are a ton others mentioned above, many of which do a fine job.

I got out of the horse race on that type of effect before Mike Beigel (Mutron III inventor) started up his new company - http://mu-fx.com/ So I haven't tried that to see how it compares.
