That was my point.UglyCasanova wrote:There are 230 strings in a grand piano, and most pianos have multiple strings attatched to each key in the upper and mid register. Doesn't really matter if you can bend a note if the strings attached to each note aren't tempered perfectly. It would still be out of tune.Chankgeez wrote:Yeah, it's not like you could just bend a note or something.

Hm. And the last few days I've been really determined to learn to tune our piano. I was like "how hard can it be?" but I guess it can be pretty hard

It takes as much time, patience, dedication, and practice as learning a new instrument. Go for it!

- check the environment the piano is in, if it is super wet or super dry you may never get the thing to tune properly
- even terrible pianos can have the sound board yanked out and then you can throw things at it for all the drones in the world
- You will know who your true friends are by who will help you move a piano and they might not be your friends when you are done
I once gave my piano to a local russian baptist pastor, he came over with a trailer and 3 of his kids to move it, they were all little so it was basically him and me, one of the kids was translating for him,
when we got to my back steps I heard the guy start yelling kinda loudly, i realized about 2 syllables in that he was counting to three and sure enough when he hit three he started pushing the piano towards me down the steps, fortunately it wasn't the worlds biggest piano, but he caught me a bit off guard, didn't die though and he and his kids had a sweet piano to jam on.

Yeah, so how much would a piano tech charge for this, or is this something I could easily do myself?ratrod wrote:You could have just the belly of the piano (strings, cast iron frame, and soundboard) with no keys and action, it would take up a similar amount of space as an unmodified piano but you would have better access to play with the strings.
Come to think of it, that's a fine use for a spinet piano!

You can do it yourself no problem, just take off everything you don't want until it looks like crochambeau's piano!

Thanks. As luck would have it, I have a lead on a local soundboard for $45. Looking into that.
