I kind of like the "what you see..." approach. Every time you play back a preset you might hear it slightly differently depending on settings. But I like the imprecision and randomness of that. Things don't get stale and predictable as much. Might force me to explore the range on the knobs a bit more instead of being locked in on a specific setting, which then later can be sort of a burden to tweak if I don't know the original settings on the knobs. But this is just me, and the same reasons I don't typically get along well with pedals with preset functionality.

Something I've always found slightly annoying about presets that include knob settings: the fact that when you change to a preset, knob position doesn't matter until you actually engage a knob. It makes for a strong visual disconnect. I know there's no way around that unless you have motorized knobs (which would be rad and I'm sure exists somewhere, despite being a very luxurious option).

Regardless, I think not having knob memory forces you to get to know your gear a little better. The more time you spend dialing in your sounds, the more you connect.

I feel like from watching the sonic state demo, that this will be more in line with what I wanted the TR8 to be. The user interface seems much more intuitive, like all the cool features seem easy.

Those polyrhythms, 64 step sequence length, and that randomness control are why I want this. The extremely limited sounds and presets are why I don't want this.

I've never really enjoy something with presets. If I find something I really like, I'll just write down a few notes. No, I won't be able to get back to the exact same patch again, but that's half the fun and you can find so many more interesting sounds that way.

Don't get me wrong, I like presets and use them with plugins all the time. I love being able to instantly recall a great sound I got. The appeal of this drum machine for me is its emphasis on hands-on performance and not so much programming. And again, I actually enjoy programming, but I also enjoy tactile instruments like this and there isn't anything else available at this price that I know of.

I'm also super interested in how it performance as a MIDI controller, I'd love to be able to incorporate it with my drum software as well.

Yeah I don't mean to totally bash presets, I just personally have never gotten along with them, so an instrument like this that seems much more immediate and intuitive excites me.

Yeah I'm averse to presets in certain cases, like I've never cared for them in effects pedals.

I've been looking for a controller with pads so this thing might fit the bill. I'm imagining all the fun that could be had with those separate outs + pedz

I wonder why more companies don't do something like the Little Phatty where you could tell where the knob was based on the LED's so that you could actively see the position change with presets.

Anyway, I definitely want this since all I've been using is a Volca and Alesis SR-16.

Yeah that's a super cool design feature I wish was used more often too, but I bet it's not very cheap to implement. Getting something like this out the door at $500 or less is probably worth the limitation for Arturia.

Not bothered by the lack of presets. I am hoping the repeater function also sends MIDI so it can glitch out other devices in sync. That would make it almost impossible for me not to buy.

Seems like a really cool piece of kit, the fact that it's an analog drummachine and it has the random functions plus the price make it very appealing to me.
I'm not completely convinced of the sound yet though, I want to hear the deepness and fatness of the bassdrum and the snap and clang of the snare.
