I played the Wren and Cuff Hangman a while back and was pretty underwhelmed by it. It seemed like it was kind of a "tamed" interpretation. I was also disappointed with like 9/10 W&C pedals that I tried out so go figure.

I scored a MIJ HM-2 recently for $60 so I'm not really actively looking for them right now, but the Arion Metal Master is supposed to be an HM-2 clone IIRC? Even those have shot up in price and from what I've read the build quality isn't great but that might be worth looking into.

I think the GL-100 ch1 dist II setting is officially the HM-2 of my dreams. It's a nice balance between chunk and chainsaw that still allows complex chords to be somewhat intelligible. Now I just need a real amplification source to replace the noisy power amp simulation on my Atomic Amplifire.

Yea, I haven't had the amazing need for one since acquiring the GL-100.

It doesn't help I really, really like the clean channel default as well I have set.

Yes, but they usually go much cheaper, commonly $100-ish. A couple on ebay last I saw.

Yea, $100 or a bit less has been market for a long time.

Until I started mentioning them here and elsewhere a few years ago..they were < $50. :)

Currently two on the bay for 100 or less.

I got my current GL-100 for well under $100 shipped and for not much more than I paid for the last, locally-sourced unit I owned. A 100% analog solid state preamp that can provide HM-2, HM-3, BD-2, SD-1, OD-1, DS-1, PW-2, AC-2, and Jazz Chorus clean channel-style tones with bonus EQ and gain shaping options is quite useful. Preset storage would have likely made the unit more marketable back in its day and more desirable in the current market, though the controls are fairly intuitive after a bit of trial and error tweaking. There are no fuzz modes, but it takes dirt pedals (including fuzzes) quite well, and the stereo effects loop, onboard speaker emulation, and multiple output options (including a pair for monitors) are added bonuses. I'm hoping to score at least one backup Guitar Driver in the near future (after first procuring a decent power amp, footswitch, and speakers).

That unit is grossly overpriced ... especially if the rack ears and original packaging are not included.

^any old Echoplex style footswitch will work with it.

The $15 1/4" FS from MF or whoever works just fine (I have a ton of them because, well, everything I have in the rack or old echo units used them and back when my feet worked I needed 10+).

Bought an XIX Tech HMD-1 clone and this thing SMOOOOOOKES the original. Came in from Siberia, and wow. Gain = classy. Mids knob = fuck yeah. Orange LED = you know it. Clickless switching = woooooo yeah. Focus = ????.

This is some next level HM-2-ing.

Sean Ryan from SRC Customs built me an HM-2 on the Dunwich board and it’s fucking awesome. It’s an always on thing for me. I run a rack rig anyways and I’ve constantly considered a GL-100 just for the extra EQ and being rackmounted. How well does it work with bass?

GL-100 works with anything I've ever run through it.

I have two!

The HMD-1 is bananas. Total quality. Really well made and it sounds amazing on bass. Pretty stoked mine is #22!!!
