Like ok we've all seen some fucking awful human being who's wearing the fucking skull shirt/has the skull tattoo/whatever and Danzig is hot garbage (Mother is easily one of the lamest songs of all time forever) but you're part of the problem if you don't like the misfits.

DoS, one of my life goals is to make an anonymous hardcore band, play one show and cover Hybrid Moments, and then slip back into the ether. Does that count?

Walk Among Us and Static Age were two of my earliest punk CDs and i know Static Age was like, a reissue or whatever, don't care.

I love The Hard Times, and as a former NYHC vegan straight edge idiot, i miss Rick Ta Life jokes.

I still rock my 14-15 year old misfits t-shirt. Static Age is still amazing. Eat da poopoo if you don't like it.

Pre 80s Misfits were amazing. Mike Graves era was a travesty. The current line up is an abortion and they should be "punished" for it.

I played with a later incarnation of the Misfits back in...2005, maybe? Jerry, Dez from Black Flag, Marky Ramone on drums. It was fun to say I did it, but it was not a good show, and the folks present were generally shitheads. Like, I didn't realize that such a large number of skinheads would turn out in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Don't listen to them much anymore, but they're still fun for what they are. It does seem like they're kind of 1) an easy target, and 2) a band with iconography that makes seeing their gear a kind of shorthand for 'I like cool stuff.' Kind of entry-level weirdo. But you don't see a lot of Sleep t-shirts out there, so that's the best we can do.

Here's what I think of the Misfits.

Danzig-era Misfits are good. Walk Among Us is fucking classic. Static Age is also a fucking classic. If you do not enjoy "Where Eagles Dare," the terrorists win. Generally, the amount that the band contributed to the aesthetic of punk and to heavy music in general is borderline incalculable. Overall, 8/10 rating for the Danzig era.

After Danzig I don't know them well enough to make a bold statement like "They suck after Danzig" but they're definitely not anything to write home about. The talent went with Danzig. I'm not gonna shoot my mouth off because I don't know enough about it. But honestly the recent lineups are pathetic. It would be like billing Ringo Starr's All-Star Band as The Beatles.

I think most people that resent The Misfits actually resent Misfits fans. Or, more to the point, Misfits "fans," as they are the quintessential "I own the t-shirt but I've never actually listened to the band" band. And that is legitimately quite annoying. The KISS-levels of merch ubiquity have not helped, so the band is complicit in it.
