Because that distortion/feedback is just perfect.
Thats it the $500 question Im asking! He also got some nice grunty tone on the Velvet Underground reunion .

Also the some other fuzzies that come to mind are the LAL Gomorrah, SS/BS Super Puzzle, and Devi GZ (or godzilla dual fuzz).

Its just so thick and dense, it almost sounds like someone is bowing a cello through a fuzz pedal. Tried to find some info on what gear he was using around that time period (mid 90s, I believe?), but wasnt able to come up with much.

Reed mentioned his love of Cornish in a Guitar World interview from the late 80s and the Cornish 'sound' is pretty much 'powered' his work from New York until his death:

http://www.guitarworld.com/lou-reed-tal ... iew?page=2

"..But we did a show at [New York’s] Supper Club, and as soon as I sat down and started to play, the guitar and amp started feeding back like crazy. So I called my friend Pete Cornish, who has built me all kinds of rack systems and multi foot pedal setups over the years. This year’s problem for Pete was, “How do I get rid of the feedback and not lose the tone?” And he built me a thing he called the Feedbucker. I told him which strings were the offending ones. There were two of them. So he built me a box with two knobs—one for one string, one for the other. You get feedback and you dial it out. Oh, I love it..."

But some pix from recent times confirm what he would use live, there was an auction for his gear after he died, alas it all went pretty quickly!

I had an NG2 a while back. It did have a very unique sound - super-quiet, yet raging end-of-the-world distortion.

I rarely use anything that distorted any more, so I sold it. But I never came across anything else quite like it. Curious to see what you come up with though.

It looks like the G2 was the pedal Reed used in the 90s....

Interestingly I was fiddling with my Sotek 'tall font' Bigmuu and I was getting very similar sounds when I lowered the 'tone' a bit, which isn't surprising since the G2 was copied off the Muff!
