To answer OP's question, yes, it is possible to make rap-rock not shitty. Although I'd agree with other commentators in this thread, that it's more likely to be rap-prog-jazz-folk-etc. than rap-rock in the Limp Bizkit, or even the RATM, vein. For example, Buck 65, Kanye West (2010-present), Death Grips, The Roots, Odd Future (more as time goes on, i.e. straight-up noise songs on Cherry Bomb), Odd Future and Ghostface's collaborations with Badbadnotgood, Gorillaz, Hoodie Allen, Kid Cudi, even Kendrick Lamar. All that stuff genre-mashes.

IMHO, that where music is headed, much less rigid genre boundaries overall. I don't know what other people mean when they say "future music" (I suspect everyone means something different) but to me, that's what it means, the shedding of genre boxes.

Mwahaha! Thank you.

But the question is: what would happen if Crass used ring mods?

(My poking fun at you is in no way a criticism. You just have integrity/consistency, and it makes me happy.)

Crass with ring mods woulda been great. LG has spectacular taste.

As far as rap rock, someone already mentioned Public Enemy w/ Anthrax, and Beastie Boys, so i'm out. Death Grips is a great idea, don't always love it. Other people been doing that industrial hip hop thing too, it's cool.

I feel like it's two genres that usually sound awkward when shoehorned together. Like hip-hop, good rapping is ideally pretty hip, (I feel uncool just writing that) so why would you then bring the most lame old uncle metal riffing and stuff into the mix? I mean, there are instances where it works, but I think that's when it doesn't sound like just a rock band with a rapper.

but this was cool:

Dälek did that industrial/noisy guitar-sampling hip-hop perfectly.

yo here's some (Northern) Norwegian rap-rock, as an example of the bad.. Tungtvann do have some bangers tho.

Derivative of the Beastie Boys, but alright nonetheless. That song in Amplitude was a real banger!

Rap and rock can jam together, rap-rock the genre? Fuck you for even thinking about it. Altough Wes Borland is fucking awesome.

Ive been wanting to make a mathrock/postrock & trip-hop/hip-hop thing for ages, but badbadnotgood and Ghostface stole my lightning.

I really liked The White Mandingos record, and I'd say that falls under this umbrella?
