When I saw the gloriously ornate and sensual shape of the Vibe Machine, I thought, "Hell yeah, I'm in business baby!" ---BUT then I saw the $10,000 price tag (now $12,000) and the FDA recall (because it couldn't actually cure cancer or open portals to the 4th dimension). Soon I found myself deep in the throws of a Wednesday morning malaise.

If you have a lotttttt of pennies that is. I'd have to sell my entire pedal collection 2 or 3 times over to afford one.

I found the Vibe Machine years ago, and I honestly couldn't tell you how, as I'm always on the hunt for esoteric oddities. I could've been doing a Google images search at 4am for military test equipment. I could've been reading up on Wilhelm Reich and his discovery of orgone. I might have been looking at a circuit bender's blog.

Big builder "Custom Shop" anything/anywhere is usually too expensive on all fronts, unless the guitar has three or four necks (at least). I used to think $2K was unreasonable for a guitar, but the EGC Tyranny changed my mind (probably other people's, too), along with the other high quality builders that have surfaced in the past 10 years (extreme bang for your buck, pretty much anything you want, spec'd & guaranteed). Prices/features can get ridiculous fast, but I suppose that's the case with everything. All of Zvex's pedals are overpriced, but their entire run is always being flipped, save a precious few (the Super Ring/Trem/Wahs, but a dealer cleared out a few of each after Xmas last year - all went for less than you'd think). It's a little silly that they waited so long to make a cheaper version of the Wooly Mammoth this year, since it's such a simple circuit & easy to DIY for around 75% less than a new one costs (Death By Audio, for that matter, is a close second in that category, almost!), but they were probably too distracted by individually hand-painting their fiscal statements.

With the exception of Spaceman or Pete Cornish (a load of hooey), some "expensive" gear warrants the term, like a classic car, or anything out of reach to people not willing to deal with their inherent quirks (true tape delays, big-ass amps w/ twenty vintage tubes apiece, guitars a few chords away from turning into sawdust, mechanical whosits & doohickeys that have no practical real-world application, solid gold picks, etc.) that would make anyone without the necessary upkeep time/cash/wherewithal lose their mind. Despite the price, somebody's gonna buy it & pay way too much, eventually (well, maybe not that Sonic Crayon pedal......yet). But by all means, if you want the thing, go get that thing & enjoy the hell out of it, whatever it is. And if you don't, someone will be waiting for you to flip it at a steep discount (hopefully, after 90 days of no bids or offers for the thing & I lowball you). That being said

Basically anything that's ever been in the Zvex custom shop. Who buys these, anyway---eccentric art collectors, rockstar WAGs, Hollywood A-listers who moonlight as rock stars on the weekends (Johnny Depp, Jared Leto)? If I paid $500 for a pedal with hand-painted glitter knobs, it would never leave the house.
