Doing better with flipping lately, trying to get down to just what I need for boards

I do regret a few trades and quick sales but not that often.

I don't collect pedals, or keep stuff that isn't on my board. I have a few kind of methods that usually determine if and when I'll flip the pedal. Depends on the pedal too. Something like a gain pedal or fuzz is a little easier to determine than something more in depth.

So I can often know right away whether something is a keeper or not

I'd like to keep more pedals, but to own less lame pedals. I either flip right away (no bond type shit) or after trying it out with my band and not finding a good use.

I occasionally flip pedals I love for shit I think I need. Namely my first Fuck and CT5 for my PitchFactor. Worth it in that case. I do miss certain pedals, but I usually just refer to neonblack's advice, which you can find in my signature.

I used to like the idea of having a "library", but after to having to cull out of necessity last year I'm finding it hard to justify spending money on shit I really don't need.
So I'm guess I'm just thinking harder about stuff before I jump on it.
I guess at the moment I'm thinking about flipping my Dunwich One Knob fuzz, but only because I want to replace it with a Fuzz Throne, which is the same pedal but with more parameter controls, and basically so that I can tighten up the bottom end a bit.
So I guess it's a matter of when I can get something else to do the job better?

I'm pretty ruthless with pedals, basses, and amps. If I'm not actively using it, or if I don't connect with it right away, it is gone. I don't really have any examples of successfully "growing into" something that didn't work for me right away, so my first gut instinct usually proves to be right.

Maybe if I had a bigger budget things would be different, but that's definitely another factor - I've got a fairly static amount of money I can have invested into gear at any point in time, so if something new comes in, usually a different thing has to leave. This means that I'll only hang on to things if they are a clear upgrade on something I already have (or serves a brand new purpose).

There are some pedals (and amps) that I regret flipping, no doubt, and others that just were never going to work for me. With basses though, I pretty much regret all of them on one level or another. IF I was to fall into more money, I could see myself continuing to flip pedals, but I'd just build an ever-growing stash of basses.

I have found, without exception, that every single pedal I have hated...sounded absolutely stunningly gorgeous with different settings on the amplifier, guitar, and accompanying pedals. There is no reason to EVER get rid of ANYTHING. Just use it better.

The failure of a pedal is a failing in ME.

I'm weird like I will flip a pedal because I don't like how it looks. Of course the sonic potential of it will also play a part, but if I have four blue pedals, I will feel the urge to sell one because I want a new colour on my board palette.

I sold a Basic Audio Tri/Ram Muff to a friend because it sounded too good. I got a cheap MFZ-1 clone that could do a trashier version of the sound I was wanting from the Muff, so I sold the BA to a friend who needed a good fuzz. He loves it, and I don't have to worry about sounding Gilmourish.

Usually I keep a pedal for at least a couple months and try it with every instrument I can before deciding if it's keeper.

Oh my god THIS. I sold an EHX Cathedral to much regret (dat reverse verb) and that was at least partly because it looked like my EHX MM Hazarai. Typing that out just made me realise how ridiculous that was.

For me, it's about feel, does this sound good with what I'm doing, and do i think I will write music into which this will fit. I've definitely had some regret with flipping, but usually I'm excited for the next thing. Flipped pedals, unless they are really rare/vintage/what-have-you, are generally obtainable again.

Yeah, me neither, will never buy an ugly-looking pedal. Just don't like when one colour starts to dominate my board. I want variety, like earthtones + rainbow.

If you folks had played guitar twenty years ago, you'd have been guitar into amp.

Picking pedals based on looks is just a foreign concept, it really is.

I didn't pick my pens based on how they looked when I wrote with ink either - all I cared about was what they made!
