Re: What microphone is this?
I don't think those are SM's either unless their is a silver body style? Maybe something AKG too? They don't taper enough either...still think there is a unidyne iii though.
Thinking it might be some weird Japanese pedal too though. Or some rebranded UK version?

Re: What microphone is this?
Yeah, difficult to tell anything from that photo. I can't see any of the mics or the pedal close enough. I looked for a higher res version of that pic, but couldn't find one.
Pedal could be Italian as well. They did some strange things with pedals too.

Yea, Crass pictures always suck...
We did find out they used a beebaa (thanks, sonidero).
haha....here is a better one (I just changed the video, I posted the wrong one originally):

edit 2: I think some of the Microphones from that Crass picture are the same as these:

Re: What microphone is this?
I tend to think of Shure as largely being "this side of the pond" until more recent decades. Maybe AKG D130 at the vox (don't know about the foam stopper, kind of hints at a smaller head, hard to I.D. at that resolution), and a D190 at the snare? Cymbal is a really rough guess, looks smallish, maybe something like a Beyer M88?lordgalvar wrote:
Are those all sm57/58s except for the lead vocal mic? What's that one (some akg with a weird wind screen)? Maybe a unidyne iii on the cymbals?
Also, what wah or fuzz is that?
edit - I didn't notice the other mic on the center cymbal, I'd lean toward a D1000 on that. Total mixed bag, no matter how you slice it.

Re: What microphone is this?
Yup...been watching a bunch of videos from the UK punk scene at the time and I think you are right...they all look AKG. Lots of D1000s, D224, and others. I think the singers of the rezillos were using the d1000 and d12 (or d14) in a lot of the promo footage.crochambeau wrote: I tend to think of Shure as largely being "this side of the pond" until more recent decades. Amebix and more of the UK hardcore, though a little later, look like that was when the Shure switch happened. The 1990s all look like Shure too.
AKG should play up that angle haha...hell, Fender is ('the sound of punk'...really hope they dont't haha). I read about those mics a bit last night and this morning (including the d1000 because of this post) and they seem to have more top end which I see fitting with the sound of that era. Thanks man!
Now the Jam...I always saw the lead vocals using something like re20 live in videos (which makes sense with his voice) and something like a d224 on backing vocals.

Re: What microphone is this?
Either I have a bad one, or the D1000 is MUCH pickier about preamplification than your standard Shure dynamic. To say it's toppier is putting it mildly. I think the impedance range is different (even though switched), but, I guess this speculation just means I'm long overdue for breaking it out and having another go at it. Maybe I'll try and work a mic shoot-out into my next demo session (once I debug the Mudlark or start building Dirty Dopers again).

Re: What microphone is this?
That's be awesome! I did read somewhere that some of these AKG mics are a little weird impedance-wise (some near 10-year old forum posts). They were also talking about the Sennheiser MD441 (which another one I learned about this thread)...so I don't know how accurate or good all that info is (and never having used any of those mics).
Mudlark! Yea! The world needs more dirty dopers too.
Speaking of which, mic in the tetanus booster?

Re: What microphone is this?
That build is just a concept piece, the mics will probably not be included except upon request. The piezo element is harvested from an indicator/buzzer I have a bag of from my days of dumpster diving in the barcode scanner factory at which I worked.lordgalvar wrote:Speaking of which, mic in the tetanus booster?

...and yeah, looking at that I realize I probably should have just eliminated the OE pigtails.
Funny, all this mic talk has me keyed up. Earlier today I just saw a couple Shure SM-59 in a courtroom shot tied to that recent embarrassing patriot thing my state (and you know, archeology) suffered. That's another decent mic, although it needs some lifting and tends to err on the side of polite.

Re: What microphone is this?
Yeah, I've been looking more at mics lately. Now to start listening to 'em more.
This's one of my favorite Jimmy Smith albums. Which was recorded in 1958, but wasn't released until 1999. For some reason Rudy Van Gelder switched mics off an on (I guess that wasn't his usual practice) while he was recording it. I can't really hear it, but a friend of mine who's a recording engineer can.

That's the name of our new band (or at least the title of our first album).crochambeau wrote: dumpster diving in the barcode scanner factory

Re: What microphone is this?
What a great album! That sucks me into the music too much to bother with trying to listen for artifacts. Anyone here have any experience with the Soviet LOMO mics? They look cool as fuck, but I hate importing paperweights.

I don't know how this Telefunken M80 sounds, but it's purple (I crossposted it in the purple pedal thread)

Agree with CRochambeau: That album was great Chankgeez!
No experience with Lomo mics...but some of those are expensive! On the other blog that Chankgeez posted, the guys sings the praises of the Oktava Soviet era d224 copies. Missed a pair last month (and if they are that good, then it is quite a steal compared to D224 prices).

Another AKG but with the screen off? Just to note it (even though it is a top of the pops video), that isn't even the guy singing...just a face to a voice beyond the normal lip syncing. Peter Shelley is the singer but he hired that dude as the face of Alvin Stardust.

Re: What microphone is this?
I was thinking about that stardust microphone and I think I ran across one like that on eBay...could have been an Altec? Gonna go look at some point.
http://www.hoborec.com/hr1.php freppo/parasit posted a picture of that on Instagram. Seems kinda neat.
