I have a hard time envisioning a world where they play a large enough role in someone's world where hatred is the inevitable result.
This is actually a pretty fair comment.

I've kept quiet but I've always had a soft spot for this band. My parents were in their 20's in the 90's so I was exposed to a lot of good music. They were musicians and there was constantly 90's alternative playing at my house. Jane's Addiction and Stone Temple Pilots were both bands I knew the words to at a young age.

You read too many reviews and have no soul, therefore deeming your opinion completely irrelevant.

Wei? Wei?
This is a very impressive collection of Roto Toms. That's 21 Roto Toms in all. That is only $33.00 a Roto Tom.

oldangelmidnight wrote:Yeah, that first album was definitely in the same territory. Thing was, they were both brand new bands. So not really ripping off except by A&R creeps.
I'm still gonna disagree, I don't think "Core" and "Ten" sound all that much alike, other than singers with a baritone range. The guitars definitely had different influences. McCready pretty shamelessly ripped off Hendrix on that first album, DeLeo definitely went for a more Zeppelin feel.

It occurred to me that I had no memory of that first STP single so I listened. Yeah, it's really the vocals. I looked up release dates and Ten came out in August of '91, Core in September of '92. People had been listening to Pearl Jam for a year and that similar vocal style was enough to make people think they were a knockoff act.
My memory of the time was that Pearl Jam seemed like a legitimate band because some of the members came from the same Seattle scenes that gave us Soundgarden, Nirvana, etc. and although Eddie Vedder was a California surfer dude, he also demonstrated a kind of emotional vulnerability. The STP narrative was that they were a bunch of guys from California who wanted to be rock stars. To me, they were early enough and well-enough established as a band that they didn't seem like bandwagon-jumpers so much as the right kind of band at the right time.
Now, Bush, on the other hand - fuck that band.

The other thing that occurred to me on relistening to Plush was that if they'd gone heavier, rather than lighter, after that first record, they'd be beloved on this forum.

Also, most people don't realize that Plush wasn't their first single. Sex Type Thing was, and that was a very un-Pearljam-like song.

Bush were amazing. Way better than STP.

I liked STP's early efforts. But, frankly, they couldn't keep it up. I'm actually surprise to see them get the respect that they are, here and now.

I was sad to hear about Weiland. I was just talking with my wife, not very long ago, about all the overdoses, and cited Weiland and Robert Downey Jr. as two hardcore addicts that managed to survive. It's a pity.
