The other day I told my friend the b-sides record was my favorite Bright Eyes record.

She said, "of course it is."

Wow, I'm such a bad fan... didn't even know they had an album out.

Yahoo! knew, but I didn't know.

Y'all talking about Noise Floor?

Really like "Drunk Kid Catholic" and the cover of "Devil Town" a lot. Otherwise that record isn't really doing it for me.

No lie though, kinda into the Christmas album.

I fucking love Dashboard Confessional and I will on my death bed.

LOL, once I had a conversation with the violinist in a "hip" indie rock band in my hometown of Fredericton, NB.

I said, "So... this is your life? You're the violin girl in an indie band? It seems a little niche, doesn't it?"

She said, "Yeah, I suppose. But I can't play the music I really wanna play in this town."

"What music do you wanna play?"

"I can't say."

I literally took her hands in mine and said, "Come on, Ruby, you can tell me. I mean, I like Dashboard Confessional. You're in good company."

As I said the words "Dashboard Confessional," she withdrew and covered her mouth with her hand.

"I swear to God, I was gonna say—Dashboard Confessional! That's my favourite band! I wanna play emo music! But these Pitchfork people won't let me!"

There was moment of silence, and we understood each other, there on the patio of the hipster bar in Fredericton, surrounded by coked-out Vampire Weekend fans exchanging saliva and money for drugs.

"I just feel... I feel like this is so illicit," she told me.

Today my wife and I were listening to Sufjan Stevens and she said, "His voice is too perfect."

I said, "Yeah, it's just so emotional."

Then she said, "The funny thing is, the two singers that convey emotion best for are Sufjan and Conor. But they're so different. One is classically trained and technically gorgeous and one is a yelpy teenager."

And I thought about it and I said, "I guess the most important thing, whether you can barely sing or you're a trained opera singer, is that you have something to say, and you mean it when you say it."

We agreed about that.

It reminded of this Henry Miller quote:
To sing you must first open your mouth. You must have a pair of lungs, and a little knowledge of music. It is not necessary to have an accordion, or a guitar. The essential thing is to want to sing. This then is a song. I am singing.
