If we're hauling out Mountain Goats, then I feel comfortable recommending Weakerthans (incidentally, their keyboard player, Jason Tait, also plays in Broken Social Scene).
Canada's polite, whiny answer to Jawbreaker. They sing really emotional songs about cats and curling.
