The same kind of goes for mid 80s The Cure. At the time I got into that stuff I was just kind of motivated to delve into that sort of thing.

Follow up question for this thread: are you more likely to be put off by an album that sounds to "good/clean" or "dirty/lo-fi?"

For me (and I would guess many here), it's the former.

EDIT: forgot how I meant to answer my own question.

Unknown Pleasures, IS one of my favorite albums, but it would have been nice to hear what they really sounded like if you saw them at the very least.. a lot of music I like is either too "good/clean" or "dirty/lo-fi" and no it isn't "that" off putting but... it does at times get in the way of what is actually there in terms of performance and songs.

Yeah, what I'd give for an official live album by them. Although I know there are a lot of recordings out there.

either. depends. if it just sounds like shit and you know it was a mistake because noone could possibly make it sound like that on purpose thinking "oh this is going to be a great sounding album", then it's the latter. I don't mean stuff like Raw Power, that's purposeful and pretty awesome

if it's too clean, it can turn me off just as much, ALTHOUGH I've noticed being more tolerant to "overproduced" music as it gets called quite a lot. I love The Dear Hunter or anything Steven Wilson does, but yes, those could easily be viewed as too clean :idk: but I don't care...

so in the end I think it's rather the latter :wha?:

There is so much rad music out there that I will definitely avoid listening to stuff that is good but with shit production.

If it's a band I love then I may be more lenient, but poor production (over or underproduced) usually stops me from getting to the point that I love the album enough to get past the production.

Has anyone mentioned Badmotorfinger yet?
Because fuck the sound of that record.
Sterility kills all the good songs and it sounds like all the interesting parts were turned into intro/outro fodder or bridges.
That may also belong in the Unpopular Opinions thread, but I hate the sound of that album with venomous rage.
Terry Date can blow me.

Also, we get like fifteen versions of Dopesmoker a year, can some asshole please do a remaster of Holy Mountain so we can get the fuck on with our lives?

I used to hate the sound of the new HoF, but after a couple of listens I'm ok with it. I don't listen to Snakes for the Divine as much as I should because it's too.....slick.

All of Lamb of God's albums sound like shit except for their Burn the Priest stuff.
That shit is good.

The Earache reissue (with snowblind) is remastered, so that qualifies for that (as well as the assholes bit)

I've never noticed how bad the production is because every song on that album is totally bitchin'

Dos, Does it still sound like someone played the original master back through a tin can and recorded that?

Yeah, it's an awesome album, I just can't deal with it sonically.
It frustrates me.
Like how 90s era slayer is all nasal.
Divine intervention is such an underrated collection of songs, but Jesus it sounds like crap.
Wait....was that Terry Date again?

Yeah, is that the reissue that the band get zero dollars from, in perpetuity?

Also, re: Joy Division, I love the production. Martin Hannett was one of the great British rock producers. That sound was all his, his vision, that spacious, darker take on the '80s sound. Great little video below.

Also portrayed wonderfully by Andy Serkis in 24 Hour Party People.

They don't make any money on the album period, and haven't for 20 years at this point. Doesn't matter the iteration (original or reissue).

I mean Holy Mountain is, at it's core, a mastered demo tape, so this is just a remastered demo tape.

I love the way it sounds, though.

Re: the money, it just fucking sucks. Really shitty label in that regard. Goes to show favouring "indie" over "major" might not be the idyllic choice bands have in mind.

Re: the sound, I love it too. I can't think of a better riff than "Dragonaut." Rips your freakin' head off.

Um, what? I think eschewing royalties in exchange for an allegedly unpaid (but who knows) six-figure bill and the opportunity to only deliver one record on a four(?) album deal with an "indie" to go after a deal with a "major" (why are you even quoting these things?) is a choice that the band made but it's hardly, you know, unprecedented or even (arguably) unreasonable. Dunno how you can dilute it down to such an oversimplification, but you might be chasing your coffee with bleach again or whatever it is you do that makes you so "special".
