Another vote for the SMMH. That paired with the Cathedral is shoegaze heaven on a budget. Personally, I don't think I'd bother dropping 400 on a delay when it's gonna be drenched in fuzz or whatever most of the time. And half decent digital delay should sound ok with both fuzz or cleans. Like others have said, look at the classic shoegaze albums and most were done with Boss stuff or similar.

I just want to shout out a feature that I find immensely helpful. Expression Control over number of repeats. Let's you really fade in and out the extremity of the wash and makes it a lot more natural than just a hard on/off.

I kind of think that an analog delay with heaps of repeats sounds way better than some cringey delay with way too much mods and filters.

Use anything you can find used. :idk:

For the slowdive/shoegaze thing, I personally think literally ANYTHING could work. It totally depends on your budget and taste, pretty much like with any pedal purchase, for any music style :idk:

I dab in shoegaze stuff too now and then, and I own(ed) a DL4, RV3, ES2, DM3, DD5, SDVM, RV7, Timebender,...
They all have their pros and cons, but I wouldn't know what makes one delay pedal more shoegazy than the other one :idk:

I think that instead of consolidating to one mega delay, I am going to get a SMMH and add it to my DSD-2 and Belle Epoch.

The Belle Epoch sounds great with dirt. I have a DOD 250 (reissue) > madebymike Rat clone > Belle Epoch > Zoom MS-70CDR (for reverb) and it's a huge wash of sound with just those 4 pedals. My Disaster Transport that also works well with dirt.

I'm holding on to a SMMH for a friend, and am selling it for him. Not sure the price he wants plus shipping from the land of norse will compete with used prices in the US, but shoot me a PM if you're interested.

If I wanted to be mean I would say the best delay for Shoegaze is to delay playing Shoegaze. I don't want to be mean so I will say that a good Shoegaze delay should compliment whatever shoes you wear when you play. You're going to be staring at your shoes most of the time and the delay will be right down there next to your feet so, it should look good with your shoes.

Best Wah for any music, and it doesn't matter what shoes you wear when you use it. Do shoegazers use wah?
