What is nü-metal?

Nü-metal is a style of metal that became extremely popular in America in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The biggest influence on the genre as a whole is Faith No More circa The Real Thing (Reprise, 1989), who also influenced bands associated with nü-metal like Red Hot Chili Peppers and Incubus. The genre blends heavy, modern metal sounds (think dimed Dual Rectifier) with rap, funk, and industrial. The lyrical focus is on aggression, so much so that nü-metal bands that traded in aggression for introspection, like Far and Deftones, are only loosely associated with the genre. A lot of it is for teenage plebs. There’s no nice way to put it. It’s true. But nostalgia is better than any DAC for making old MP3s sound killer, yahmean?

Yes, one in particular called post-grunge, which shares a fanbase and radio airtime. Post-grunge is a bit of a misnomer, because it doesn’t actually refer to the best bands that followed in grunge’s wake, liked Seaweed, Sebadoh, or Wintersleep; rather, it refers to the bands heavily influenced by Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. Eddie Vedder has personally called each of these bands and asked for his voice back. Fun fact, nine out of ten people agree that this genre is responsible for more contemptible sonic abortions than any other genre, hands down.

Dope’s “Die Motherfucker Die” remains my favourite nü-metal song, primarily because I have a vivid memory of my younger brother whipping french fries at seagulls to it. Linkin Park’s “The End” is probably the best-ever song for when, you know, you tried so hard, and got so far, etc. 

The defining nü-metal albums are probably Slipknot’s Iowa (Roadrunner, 2001) and KoЯn’s Follow The Leader (Epic, 1998), but they suck, and the best band listed above is definitely System of a Down. They labelled their own sound “Armenian rock” and it definitely has a more unique flavour than the others. Check out Toxicity (Columbia, 2001), which is pretty much the only perfect album the genre ever produced (unless you count Rage Against The Machine as nü-metal, which is beyond a stretch).

As for post-grunge, there are no good albums, but Our Lady Peace had a lot of good songs (chief among them “4 AM” and “Superman’s Dead”). Wait, Collective Soul’s greatest hits album, Seven Year Itch (Atlantic, 2001). There you go. If you had to.

What is metalcore?

It’s all in the name, as metalcore is a fusion of metal and hardcore punk. Specifically, I’d say it borrows metal’s focus on chops, and punk’s focus on fucking shit up. The most important characteristic is the breakdown, calculated for maximum, rhythmic heaviness, perfect for whipping circle pit into a frenzied orgy of black hoodies and (one can only assume) blacker hearts. It’s all screamed vocals and double kick. Metalcore has yielded some of the best musicians in any genre, like UnderOATH’s original drummer Aaron Gillespie, guitarist/vocalist Josh Scogin of Norma Jean and The Chariot, and anyone associated with Protest The Hero. I’m just gonna cut to the chase and say that most metalcore music is absolute shit, created by Hot Topic to sell t-shirts. It is telling that my Mac attempted to autocorrect the word “mallcore” to “milker.” Beware of and/or death to false metal(core) such as Black Veil Brides, Tokio Hotel, and Motionless In White.

How much has it changed over the years?

I’d say a lot, but no more than most genres do over time. Early metalcore bands like Hogan's Heroes and Earth Crisis sounded a lot more like hardcore punk than they did like metal. But the basic sound was there, just not as polished or commercial.

Yes, emo, pop-punk, and above all post-hardcore. It wouldn’t be unusual to see a metalcore band sharing a bill with a post-hardcore band. Thrice mellowed out but remained connected to the scene, for example. Norma Jean and mewithoutYou toured together, did a split, and featured on each other’s records. Stuff like At The Drive In, Glassjaw, Chiodos, Dance Gavin Dance, Alexisonfire, From First To Last, From Autumn To Ashes, Emery, Saosin, Thursday, Boys Night Out… ah, God, you know what post-hardcore is. Fugazi and their discontents. I am not gonna list all the good post-hardcore albums because it’s really pushing relevancy at this point. I gotta get to bed.

Oh, and fun fact: Skrillex, née Sonny Moore, used to be singer in From First To Last, so it’s no surprise that he pilfered metalcore’s breakdowns, played them on synth instead of guitar, and in the process, created brostep—the American face of the Bristol underground genre dubstep, that shares its name, but not its sound. Wub wub wub.

Anyway Nu Metal was fun because it pissed people off. Specifically, it pissed everyone off. Making it the best genre ever. Also I think the third or fourth pair of boobs I ever saw in real life was at a Slipknot/SOAD show and that was awesome. Formative experience, you might say. Plus if you actually wanted someone to check out the best Nu Metal album ever you would tell them to listen to White Pony -- which is a tremendous record. Toxicity is a good one, too. Iowa is one of the only 2000's metal albums that anyone actually listened to that was recorded to 2" tape, and Ross Robinson's production is fucking killer.
