See, emo isn't about killing yourself. It's about finding the strength to move past depression or mental illness or whatever and get your life back. I think it's a misconception that emo is sad music. The whole scene is a kaleidoscope of joy to me. The lyrics might be depressing but it's catharsis.

I know this but people kill them selves for many reasons and to just say that is weak is un-empathetic and discounting someone else's emotions and motivations or lack there of.

Okay, that's fair. I acknowledge that. let me rephrase: for me, suicide would never be an option.
I guess my personal opinion is something like, I understand if you feel depressed, and I empathize with the fact. But I don't think that we should ever sanction suicide... it's not something that should be seen as a legitimate option.
Although disclaimer, I am not an empathetic person. I would go so far as to call myself a sanctimonious person.

Not weak about the autonomy to choose your own death. Our culture has some weird puritanical beliefs tied with Ayn Randian bullshit with everything. It's like people calling the 9/11 terrorists cowards. They were a lot of negative things but cowardly was not one of their traits.
The whole "I'm going to conquer my fears with a positive attitude and hard work" is something somebody under 40 says right before they completely destroy their life in a major way. Whatever issues you've had you'll always have, maybe you'll manage them better but if they're really deeply embedded they're not going anywhere. You can maybe pretend they're not there for a few years but there just building out of control behind the scenes.

A grindcore band probably shouldn't make an hour long album but if Sunn O))) or the Swans put out a 15 minute album id be a little disappointed unless they had several of them. A single prereleased from a band with a fairly conventional structure is different than a movement from an album of textural soundscapes which would just feel out of place without context.
Ya. It mostly depends on style of music and the artist's creative vision. Lots of pieces work better as singles while other music takes time to unfold...only making sense when framed in context provided by an album.
Also some artists cant hold an album by themselves.
My opinions...trust your ears; your vision.
...and it's def better to leave the people wanting more than bore them with excess.

This, seriously. There are so many records that would be much better as a 10" or something. The reason I'll never play more than 20 minutes if I can avoid it.

It depends on how they did it! If you actually hid it in the gap, then bully for you. If you put thirteen minutes of silence between the last track on the track list and the secret track, so that ripping it yielded one eighteen-minute track, a plague on you and all your generations.

Best was Darker Side of the Spoon, with it at the end of a ton of blank tracks… good trolling

It came to my attention that I offended some people with some remarks re: suicide in this thread, and I legitimately feel really shitty for it.
I was just shooting my mouth off; I thought that's what everybody was doing. I didn't know anyone was going to take it to heart.
You know, I know about depression and suicide and the nature of those things, I have been depressed, I know that not everyone who commits suicide is weak or selfish, I know that some people just can't see a way out. I meant to say, I would never commit suicide, and if I committed suicide, I would be weak.
It was personal comment that I generalized and I'm very sorry for what I said.
Fuck, I didn't know that shit got real on this website. I'm new here. Forgive me.
The shitty thing is I legit lost an ILF friend over this shit.

There are plenty of weak justifications to kill yourself. That doesn't mean everyone who commits suicide is weak
If someone is terminally ill and in acute pain...are they to be judged as weak for wishing to shorten their suffering and die on their own terms?

Right, I see now why what I said was wrong. I shouldn't have been so judgmental. I shouldn't have shot my mouth off.
