The thing is that much of what you're asking exists in some digital formats. I can do three reverse delays, envelope-controlled, in a Boss GT-001/100. Also the pedal market as mentioned has flipped to the idiot side of things again - the Ditto being the great example of what shouldn't be since guitarists can't grasp that features can *not* be used in a device, but they're a lot harder to add to something like that that's built for stupid.technicoloraudio wrote:The Pittsburgh Patchbox has been calling my name, but I was hoping that there would be some innovation in pedals specifically. I watched something the other day about someone playing their Twin Reverb into the base of an upright piano and mic'ing the open top. Eventually that will probably be an Eventide reverb algorithm.
And the older weird stuff went over like lead bricks. Lexicon Vortex was the biggest wacky flop of all time, and it's never been equalled for some stuff. Not a pedal, but you won't find everything you're asking for in a tiny format. Digitech Time Bender was another one that crashed and burned badly but does amazing stuff, etc.
Other stuff that's out now that gets very little props because it's Boss does some amazing shit, but I got tired of shouting into a canyon of apathy. The MDP pedals are flat out phenomenal, and the several years old FRV-1 for faux tank sound kills any Belton brick-based thing trying to do the same thing. Overtone/Adaptive Distortion/Tera Echo are going to be the $400+ pedals of the future, they really are.

My future sees a programmable copycat pedal. All you do is plug it into your favorite vintage effect in and out (dual stereo capable) and it can trace the circuit (which is then editable if desired). So that one pedal that that one guitarist used on that one specific song is now downloadable....

To be fair, solid state guitar amps never recovered after all the shitty low end amps that were built, whereas there are plenty of good high end bass amps.

Depends on what you're looking for. I use SS amps as a pedal platform, and go towards the higher end.
Then they're 100% what I want without issue.

the problem isn't that cool shit doesn't exist, it's that people are so anal about having everything made in a format that's compact, stand-alone, easy to understand, etc (but then if it actually gets released half of them will whine about the price or where it's made or that it doesn't fit their aesthetic standards, insisting upon waiting for used ones to hit the market to save themselves money whilst not supporting the maker at all, etc).
you can do basically anything you want with a computer nowadays (proper computers, i'm not talking about condensed mobile/tablet applications), most things you can even get to low enough latency to perform without noticing it, if there's something you're looking for it's not unspeakably difficult to construct it in a DAW or by learning a platform like Max/MSP. all of this can be interfaced with non-software devices and can be done at minimal cost, you can pirate a shit-ton of software and buy basic interfacing apparatus and be out less than the cost of a fuzz pedal...
lack of innovation in effects processing is much less of a problem than the notion that players are just players and don't need to be creators, that they don't need to worry about getting off their asses to solve larger problems than 'what's the best _____ pedal for _____' etc.
i'm not sure you can ever really expect the stompbox industry to evolve that much, so if there's something you'd like to see the constructive thing to do would be to make it yourself, the builders doing cool shit are regular people too, there's no reason why any one of us can't explore these things and try and turn them into stompboxes if that's really necessary.

Dude, Boss/Roland is known for the worst presets ever, and like any synth, someone should be willing to get in there and make their own patches. So, it takes patience and learning about how to program synths in order to make the sounds you want. But it's not in a convenient format, isn't cheap, and requires a piece of external hardware to boot.
But that's the price of making faux electric sitar that tracks in real time being pitch-mangled with a piano accompaniment that has zero attack and infinite sustain!
