Mono seems pretty bland to me :idk:

they've had a couple good pieces but really... in the greater scheme of things crescendoing, are they any special? :idk:

Mono is the only show that I have ever fallen asleep at. To be fair though, Maserati was opening for them, and their set was ridiculously fun and upbeat, so Mono bringing it back down was just bound to kill the mood. EITS is not great, I walked out on their show because I couldn't tell if they had changed what song they were playing in 30 minutes and grabbing a bite to eat seemed like a better use of my time.

I'm really pretty done with post-rock, it's just sort of an exercise in tedium. And this is coming from a guy who has literally sat there and listened to Sachiko M intermittently play sine waves for an hour. I still like Mogwai and Godspeed though so :idk:

Ooh Maserati! Was that before the drummer died? Because that era was ridiculously fun even just from the album. Afterwards... sort of lost it for me :idk:

Whoa wait Maserati's drummer died? When was this? They're my bike riding soundtrack. Them and Bolt Thrower

When we played with them Mono were definitely kinda shitty about having to let other people adjust the hardware on the backline kit and stuff but I just put that down to the usual shit of dealing with hired backline and a ten band bill.

TBH Sigur Ros were where I tapped out on this stuff. Crescendocore.

Yeah, it was like two months before he died. It was a great show, super high energy. I remember the wife and I both thinking their drummer was great, so to hear that news sucked.

November 2009, I think. He died jumping out of a broken elevator or something.

Not sure if you played that thing at the Tweed with them, but I heard a lot of reports that they were demanding other bands cut sets short so that they could play their 20minute ambient walk on track, as well as telling other bands playing in different venue rooms to turn down so there wouldn't be any leak into their set....which had not yet started.

oh shit I did remember hearing that about Maserati drummer. Man, that's terrible.

Iommicdude nah, we played with them at the first Dark MoFo in Hobart. They had a really pushy tour manager though.

i get what you mean but that statement is actually true about Godspeed and they're pretty well-loved around here/everywhere, so maybe thats not always a bad thing :idk:
Yeah, for sure. My attitude on Godspeed is close to:
spacelordmother wrote: Although I agree that they have an identifiable overall style, I hear a lot of differences in approach and instrumentation from album to album that makes each stand on its own.
But maybe Godspeed's aesthetic and enigmatic qualities, along with the type of shit they always tend to write, resonantes with me more, so I don't feel the same.

But Godspeed have still recorded a decent amount of "meh" material. & I'd totally go see Mogwai live in a heartbeat.

Don't ever listen to me.

Every genre is stupid.

Yeah, I'm sad that the genre has deviated so much into the earlier sounds of bands like Talk Talk. Most of the bands in the genre that still resonate with me are old standards now, the Mogwais, the Godspeeds, the Sigur Ros' and the Swans of the world.

Mono have some great moments, but they are a fucking terrible band overall, jesus. They obviously come from a punk/indie scene and have managed to only keep themselves in this stratum of "post-ock godhood" through sheer name recognition alone. I was done with them right after Hymm to the Immortal Wind, and then I heard Legend off For My Parents, the key change in the that song should've been banned by the Geneva convention.

Also Ganger. Man, I loved Ganger.

Fun fact: my old band was supposed to open for Ganger when they played Providence on their first US tour. Unfortunately, their booking person didn't quite understand US geography, and booked them in North Carolina the night before. They didn't make it. So the three opening bands just played later, and probably to about the same sized crowd that would have been there if Ganger had made it. Ah well.

Also, Tortoise? I mean, I know that post-rock means SPECIFIC CODIFIED THINGS INVOLVING LOTS OF DELAY ON GUITAR NOW, but back in the old days, it was all about jazzy weirdness. At least for a hot minute it was.

Post-rock is a mediocre genre, but the biggest bands in the genre are good.

Godspeed, Explosions, Mono, Mogwai, Sigur Ros, High Llamas, Tortoise, Toe, Moving Mountains, as well as the metal side of it like Pelican, Russian Circles, ISIS, the relevant work of Boris, all of these bands are at least good bands with a few excellent albums, and some of them are just incredible bands in general.

The problem isn't the bands, it's the genre.

A lot of people said "All genres suck."

Right on; as a genre, much of post-rock became a circle-jerk about a decade ago; codified and predictable and car-commercial-ready.

Explosions just don't have a lot of variation in their sound. After The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place they sort of plateaued, which is fine; they did "Your Hand In Mine," which would be an achievement even if it was the only song they'd ever really done.

But Mogwai are part of a select group of popular rock groups that never settle for one sound, constantly pushing the envelope, or at least, their envelope, and that's why they categorically do not suck.

Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will (sidebar: best album title ever) was fantastic and then they turned around and released Rave Tapes which was also great, but totally different, just a few years later, both in late career.
