Sonic Titan: Good call. It's just that with my short attention span and serious case of GAS, I kinda have to worry about resale value a bit. Which is why I usually don't mess with diy clones :idk:

No somewhat established builders out there that offer anything Sonic Titan-esque?
Surprisingly not many people building anything similar. Fuzzrocious might be the closest. Ram the manparts uses the same chip as the titan. The key here is to use the -4 chip, not the -1. The latter is buzzy. I've used my ST through a traynor YBA-1, and it sounded really good. Retains all the low end and very clear sounding.

I got zzzzzzz to build me a clone for less than $100. Sometimes people on here sell ST clones for less than 60$, and it's pretty easy to flip IMO.

That said, I also recommend the HM-2, particularly the ones made in Japan.
HM-2: Sooner or later I'm bound to end up with one. It's one of the few Boss dirt pedals I never actually owned myself, even though it's one of the few Boss dirt pedals that I actually like :)

My buddy has one laying around I think, I'll loan it from him to try through my rig.

You talked me into looking for a used ST clone. Anyone reading this can consider this reverse spam :)

On the Talons suggestion: Havent heard too many convincing demos, but I have yet to try an EQD that doesn't sound good or even stellar. They all look nice, are top notch quality, quiet, board friendly sized,...But probably twice or more what a Fab Tone Sonic Titan clone would cost me, and I'm not sure it'll be worth that to me personally :idk:

A couple other that caught my attention, info/opinions would be welcome...:

-BAT Witch burner. The few demos I checked sound rad, but they're all either recorded terribly, and/or they're recorded using a downtuned les paul through a $3K doom worrthy full stack. Which can make a ds-1 sound badass imo, and my own gtr/amp is pretty much the opposite in a lot of ways.

-Dunwich: The volt thrower might be a good way to get back into rats. The wizard fuzz might be cool too, though as always it's hard to tell how it'll sound with my amp/gtr, just by checking a handful of demos that were done with totally different gear :idk:
And I have no idea about pricing and availability yet, but I'm pretty sure something lik a fab tone would kill everything else in that regard :)

I'm never quite sure what the Fab Tone actually is but it's supposed to be based on some Boss pedal(s) in the HM-2 type vein if I understood correctly.
Going from that I'd also suggest you to try out the real deal, the Boss HM-2.
Another one you could try is the Digitech / DOD Death Metal.

As far as BAT goes I tried quite a few and they share quite some similarities, that said I think the best one I tried so far is the Pharaoh.
I would advise against any Muff type but the BAT Pharaoh or Earthbound Supercollider in your case.

Since you didn't like the Mooer OCD clone I wouldn't advice a Fulltone OCD either, there's not enough difference.
You could try a MI Audio Blues Pro, it can rock pretty well and the newer versions also have a nice fuzz mode on there.
Or maybe a Zvex Box Of Rock Vexter or a Zvex Box Of Metal Vexter.

If you like things fuzzy maybe check the Fredric Effects Harmonic Percolator or the Infanem Driving Notion.

That's about all I can think of right now in regards to your criteria of a drive pedal that can rock, is built well and is available (second hand) at a decent price.
good deals with: the_brow, phantasmagorovich, alexsga, DarkAxel, goroth, The Wood Wizard, Tendollarcat, vbps, monkeydancer, intothegroove, Brobee

The only ones I have really liked were the Truck Loud, LAL Steroid O.D., LAL Angel Ring (a boost/o.d....I think it works well with the Beta Lead...haven't tried it much outside of that setup), and hotcakes/mtl.asm positive. Steroid O.D. is usually the one I bust out when looking for note clarity and Angel Ring for adding grit and loudness to fuzzes. But I always say LAL, right?

You and UG seriously have me GASing for some LAL stuff. I just don't know what. My OD and normal/gated fuzz is covered by TAFM and Mini. Gomorrah seems cool but I don't know about on Bass. Maybe one of the oscillo fuzzes but they're so expensive and rare.

Well Mellowtone stopped being a functional company a few years ago, so I don't think that'll be happening any time soon. :hobbes:

However, Mudfuzz and tom, and pumpkinpieces and some other homies did some similarly low-fi demos.

I could do a gomorrah bass demo thing if you want with my wife's short scale and jazz bass. I started with bass, but she likes it better which is why I play guitar haha. Steroid O.D. doesn't sound very good with bass IMO. Angel Ring or Truck Loud would probably be better. Gomorrah is awesome though because it really responds well to pickup changes and playing dynamics (if you like gated fuzz) but it always sounds like gomorrah (meaning, it's got a great sound...like OT mode is one of my favorite fuzzes but it's not going to change who it is). 46 sounds awesome with bass and I think my wife took it from me and Nad can attest to its awesomeness (a lot of people don't like scooped, but I like mode 1 which I think is mid boost better anyway, but mode two is a blast and sounds great).

I did run Octavella and Gomorrah in a parallel setup through my beta lead using a stereo MM the other day after remembering that comment you had made a long time ago...yea, it was too much, haha.

At first glance, those all seem like good contestants, but they're not what I'd call cheap and easily available on the (european, preferably) used market :s

The truck loud actually sounds a bit plain in the clips I checked, like not dramaticly different from similarly voiced mxr/hardwire/dod/boss alternatives :idk:
And even though I like my dirt pedals lean and mean, a tone control instead of a dark/bright toggle switch would've made a lot more sense imo :idk:

Again though, judging pedals solely based on online demos can be fucking deceiving.

Couldn't find too many LAL demos btw, or at least nothing that didn't have shitty audio quality :idk:

Thanks. Still not sure if it's the pedal or the recording quality, but that's all just a little too...'low-fi' for my taste. As in not quite in the same league as any of the other pedals mensioned so far :idk:

I am a big fan the the DOD 250 for always-on crunch, but I might have to toss in a vote for the Verellen Big Spider. Not too expensive when you can find one used, and the tone switch makes it hells of versatile.

Also a fan of the DBA Interstellar OD, it's like the 250 on crack...

I can make something with my 8-track if you want to wait a few days and you'd think it would help (for steroid o.d. and angel ring but I am sure someone else out there could do better). I wouldn't call them cheap either but you can get the Angel Ring for an ok price (they are kinda of a wait for the price you want thing to me). If you buy direct from Hirofumi you save a little too. Why not use something into your hotcakes or after to just get more gain? Or a low gain fuzz before? Something like an FZ-1b or a demo tape fuzz. Maybe somekind of EQ or something around the hotcakes to give it some bite and gain on the freqs you want?

There are the basic audio Overtdrive, Lucky Number, and shore bird (which, to everyone I have talked to and the demos I have heard is a great improvement on stock rat tones) too. People love the basic audio stuff.

I hope you didn't watch my demo of the steroid o.d. .

I know stuff is expensive, but I think it is fun to trade and find new things that I never would have tried too.

edit: I'm going to say this about demos: I think they are alright to get a general idea or someones intrepetations of a pedal, but they in no way show what it is going to be like in your setup or with how you play. Demos are more like a sketchbook of what I (or whoever makes them) thinks/uses a pedal which is different from everyone else. They are fun to watch, but I used to put way more trust in them than I do now. I think you've got to go more with the opinons of people that you have aligned with in the past (like if you have liked D.o.S.'s choices in the past, why not try the singing tree or than the fact it may be hard to find? It's not like those demos are indicative of what you're setup or style is like). Not preachin' or nothin', just my opinion. I just know my tastes with the pedals I have played, and take reccommendations from people that kinda have the same tastes but have tried similar pedals...like a venn diagram.

The DOD 250 is one of those pedals that's been on my wish list for ages, but there was always something else that came inbetween...:s

I may get some heat for this, but imo DBA is usually grocely overpriced for :s

And isn't the big spider more of a vintage-y voiced medium gain octave up fuzz? Cause I'm kinda looking for a high gain od/distortion, sorta like a rat but with more grit/bass.
