The first time I heard Bad Moon Rising by Sonic Youth was huge for me. I was in a dark adolescent phase of my life. All that noise and guitars that didn't sound like guitars made me realize that music didn't have to be so linear. It would take me years to actualize that in my own writing, and consequently any music I was involved in after I heard that felt somewhat unfufilling until I was able to form my current group, Weary Heads.

And that's an extensive enough list, I guess. There are actually many more albums I could list in each time frame. I was /am constantly listening to things that I feel are so much a part of who I was, who I am, and who I will be. I'd be here for years listing all the things that have shaped me, not only musically, but as a person. But this'll do for now, I suppose.

I used to only listen to classic rock (maybe REM at the newest) until I heard Funeral by Arcade Fire. I also was a teenager, so that was perfect high school angsty feels music.

Skeletal Lamping by Of Montreal opened me up to music that was "poppy" but still very good.

Those are the top two that really came at just the right time for me and changed the way I thought about music.

I was an innocent 16 year old and on a flight to Thailand when, while flicking through the provided entertainment, found this film nestled in the music section. I was a straight up "hard rock" kind of guitarist and owned a singular pedal, an NYC Big Muff. I had never really enjoyed Radiohead to that point. People had recommended me "OK Computer" and "In Rainbows" but I didn't really dig them. Even to this day I'm not really into them.
Anyway, I decided to give this a spin without knowing shit and the first song, "Bloom", literally changed my life. Sound-on-sound/Looping stuff, short dirty analog delay. 3 percussionists. Horns. Fucking SO MANY LAYERS. I watched the whole thing with my jaw to the floor and when I returned home I saved up my dollaz and bought my first of many delay pedals, a Pigtronix Echolution Phi which was 1/2 price because the Tap Tempo was fucked.
And so began my descent into GASdom and I still hold this album above most others.

Lungfish - Talking Songs for Walking

So I was scanning quickly, and missed who wrote this post. But then I saw the Lungfish album and thought "I bet that's Ugly Nora!" Scrolled back up, and yep, it's you!

And every time you post Lungfish, I think the same two thoughts: "Damn that's good!" and "Why don't I look deeper into Lungfish?"

PART I

My introduction to music consisted primarily of the Allman Brothers, Beatles, the Everly Brothers, the Dire Straits, and similar bands. Mostly these releases. By the time I was 4 and certainly by the time I was 6 I probably knew the lyrics to most of these band's songs by heart.




In earlyish school years and into the start of high school my music mostly centered around this kind of stuff - a lot of obvious and cliche albums - along with some assorted pop and hip hop. I liked some good things but on the whole a lot of rubbish, and the things that were good I didn't really know why they were good.




During high school I was introduced to these three albums. Up until here I really don't think I knew what I liked or why I liked it. I mostly went with the flow. Metallica, Tool, and Dream Theater totally changed the way I thought about music. I'd say that up until this point I wasn't really "actively" listening when I listened to music.

I was exposed to such an incredible variety of music from a young age it's impossible to even start. I was born in '72 my mom was a hippie so Beatles, Zep, Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Janice, Dylan, THANK GOD NO FUCKING GREATFUL DEAD!, then into disco and '70s rock so everything from Donna Summer, to Cheap Trick, & Bowie. Then my stepfather came in who was into Zappa, King Crimson, Eno, Capt. Beefheart, Maryanne Faithful, Sabbath, Hendrix, etc...

Then I became a metal head for quite a while, but liked punk, reggae, classic rock, disco, and shit still. Then at about 17 the Butthole Surfers and Janes' Addiction, Ministry, NIN, Nirvana, and all that shit were coming on the scence. Loved Sound Garden, Mudhoney (fucking love the shit out of Mark Arm's vox), Pearl Jam, The Melvins, The Rev. Horton Heat, Three Blue Teardrops, etc...

Then there's all the stoner rock shit.

And that doesn't even touch on all the folky and old school country stuff I listened to with my grand-father, or the big band stuff and Rat Pack stuff I love or it's modern ancestors (Secret Sisters, Rachel Brooke, Hank III, shit like that).

Yeah, impossible list is impossible.

After going through and reading what everyone else so far had mentioned, I feel bad for my taste. As a young child, I was exposed to what my dad listened to mostly; Phil Collins/Genesis, Pat Benatar, James Taylor, Van Morrison, and lots of the Rolling Stones. These groups (except for Pat Benatar) still bring great memories.
Moby's "18" album was the first album I got and I still like it. Love Moby, "Play" is a better album though. I'm a softy.
Sonic Youth's "Daydream Nation", ATDI's "Relationship of Command", and Minor Threat's "ST" I learned all through a magazine article on influential albums and the first time I heard music that wasn't "popular". This was like 2000 or 01 and Much Music was the only way to get know new music that wasn't Britney Spears. I was sheltered, my friends listened to NWA and Dr. Dre alot and Eminem too.
Interpol's "Antics" and "Turn on The Bright Lights" got me into wanting to play guitar, watching the music video for "Slow Hands" made me realize I could dance like a twitchy preppy ass. I should have realized then I was watching Carlos D. and hearing his bass more than Daniel Kessler and his lead guitar.
MSTRKRFT's "ST", The Blood Brothers "Crimes" and Justice's "Cross" made me love distortion and harshness.
Lastly, The Dave Young Quartet's "Mean What You Say" got me love jazz and softer music again.

I should give a shout out to Weezer's ""Blue" and "Green", Sonic Youth's "Washing Machine", Medicine's "Shot Forth Self Living", The Sea and Cake "The Biz" and hell; Metz's ST.
