Absolutely nothing wrong with John Stainer.

I saw him play with The Mark of Cain once upon a time. This guy came out, tall, kinda like a scruffy accountant, with a dirty polo shirt on. Started setting up drums. I figured it was the roady. He said nothing. Did his stuff efficiently then left the stage. Later that night the same guy walks out with the Mark of Cain.
No shit - that was John Stanier? I thought. He started playing and from the first hit to the last that kit shook like jelly. It was the most brutal drumming performance I've ever seen and it was glorious. No studio work could ever do justice to how awesome he is.

Alright, alright you guys. I was being overly sensitive. Every time I talk with someone about Nick Reinhart/Tera Melos the only two responses I get are "Who?" and "OMG THAT BAND IS THE BEST!" so I get confused when someone says "Yeah, I know them, not for me." I am admittedly a huge fan boy (gave Nick a bootleg Bart Simpson phone when they played here! He hung out with me afterwards

) and my defensiveness comes lashing out if someone doesn't immediately s the d of my favorite band.
For the record: I like doom, I am really starting to appreciate drone (playing as well as listening) and ambient snorecore. I was going for a low blow because I know how much my homies here like letting their fuzz rip and cranking their Verellen/Science/Sunn/whatever amps. I love doing that too guys, I just really like Tera Melos. A lot
Math rock is 100% played out. IMO T-Mel is one of the only bands who are still doing something interesting with the genre, which they have pretty much abandoned. I consider their current stuff Beach Boys + LSD and I think it is a lot more interesting than the 20 minute instrumental epics of their earlier albums.
Anyway, I think this video is cool, can totally see why someone wouldn't be into it. Honestly it would be 100% better if it was like 4 minutes vs 22.
At least we can all agree: UG is the man, and you guys are cool too. Even if we don't all like the same band

ThurberMingus wrote:What is all the T-Mel/Nick Reinhart hate? Wat?!? Dude is absolutely blowing the lid off of like 10 different genres at once, all while shredding and implementing effects in songs and ways most of us would never imagine. I do get why someone wouldn't like his "proto-wankery" but holy cow. What's next? Are you people gonna start talking shit about Battles?
"Ahh bro, he's playing all those notes. I'm not really into playing that many notes... or any notes for that matter. I feel like if you can get one note going, you've nailed it. Especially if you can get that note to happen without touching a guitar... Yeah. Man I hate notes. Particularily if there's more than one."
Just kidding ILF, but I will take proto-wankery and math-surfpop over drone/doom/snorecore any day of the week. I love you guys, but how can you not like Tera Melos? Wat?
Battles are rad.
I don't want to rag on Tera Melos or Nick Reinhart. I just don't get what's so great about them/him.
I wanted to leave it at that (because I dislike dudes hating on stuff people are jazzed about), but I also feel like I owe an explanation given the consternation the unlove is causing some good dudes so...
I think there are dudes doing the delay thing better (for DL4 fun Minus the Bear, or delays in another context - Devin Townsend), I find other bands/dudes do the effects thing in a way such that it feels integral to the music and the player (St Vincent, Nels Cline, Billy Gibbons, Tom Morello to name a few from a pretty wide musical spectrum) whereas Tera/Nick it always feels like an add-on or like a stunt or something, and as for putting in lots of notes in a short space of time there are an awful lot of guys who I think do it better - his playing on demos especially is like what would happen if Kerry King played math rock - sporadic fast notes not quite picked cleanly punctuated by random whammy bar shit. As much as I love Slayer... and strangely enough their solos... dudes are hacks.
I've tried to like em/him, I really have, but I just keep coming up meh

That dude is a fucking machine on the kit.
Now let's talk about Page Hamilton's solos. Nick who?

Anyone who gazes at shoe should listen to the new Tera Melos record. I fucking hate math rock, and I think this record is the shit.

But I can only take so much of his proto-wankery before I tune out...
Indeed. It kind of has become a gimmick and folding in on itself.
In terms of all the projects he is in, he right really great, different stuff. Tera Melos, Bygones. Really good stuff in there. And his scary sounds stuff is good for laughs (in a good, enjoyable way).
And yes, I think he has demonstrated how powerful the DL-4 is. Especially some of the older Tera Melos songs, where he is using it while the band is playing, not just on his own. There is one live vid where he does this reverse/double speed loop thing that is so perfect. Awesome.

Also wanna say that while Nick has an impressive pedal collection now, yall should peep the boards he has used over the years. It was super inspiring to learn about the cheap/broken pedals he used for years and helped me reject the cool pedals = cool music attitude I still come across.

Nick Reinhart is one of the most inspiring guitarists I have ever heard. His approach balances technical prowess and creativity is such a unique way... He has a sound that is all his own. All due respect to UG, (luvyabuddy) but Reinhart would absolutely rip him to shreds. No contest.
Math is good. Doom is good.

^^^^^ Definitely. He uses pedals in very effective (no pun) and creative ways. Despite having lots of pedals, he doesn't need to hide behind him. Though in recent live shows he does a lot of those pedal tricks (like the stutter/hold) a little too much IMO. Beyond how they were used when the songs were recorded and were used just right and its a little over done.
I think I like what he did with Zach Hill for Bygones. By is an amazing fucking record and I keep finding new riffs/ sounds. So good.

Anyone who rocks a broken Boss DD-5 and Behringer Ultra Shifter that hard isn't going to win any "look at my fancy collection" contest. His freak-out ADD playing has always come first.
