Re: DOD Meatbox
To be honest, a Meatbox reissue should be priced sub $140ish to take over my Boneshaker gas
Can anyone remind me whats so awesome about the meatbox? I know I liked it when a buddy of mine was using one, but that was literally decades ago. Aside from the unobtanium factor, whats the attraction? Surely theres' got to be plenty of similar circuits out there that are relatively easy to find under $200?

It's a sub harmonic pedal, different from a lower octave pedal. An no, there aren't. Mantic Conceptual makes the density Hulk, and Beef Bag. The later being a dorect clone of the Meatbox and the former their improved version of the circuit. Both I think go for $200. Now, there is the 3leaf Audio Octafbre or however you spell it and that is an OC2/mutron Octaver clone with a sub switch $250 I think?, the Godlyke Great Divide which is a highly modified EHX MICRO SYNTHETHIZER circuit with a sub control$400, And I think Red Witch makes one that goes for about $300.
I had the Mantic Density Hulk pro a while back and I loved it. I sold it out of nesecity l, and I miss it very much. I would simply buy another Density Hulk if DOD weren't reissuing the Meatbox, which is why MANTIC discontinued their Density Hulk Pro. They don't believe they will be able to clmpete with it.
A few manufacturers are jumping on the bandwagen of creating pedals that they label "sub" but none besides the Mantic ones are related to the Meatbox which has it's distinct sub sound that people want.

So, what's the difference between the meatbox and the buzz box?

meatbox = subharmonic generator (blends in 35hz tone and boosts 60hz band)Eivind August wrote:So, what's the difference between the meatbox and the buzz box?
buzz box = suboctave distortion (they were trying to cop buzzo's rat>blue box tone and failed terribly but it's a great circuit IMO)
the meatbox is essentially useless/dangerous if you're not running it into bass/full range PA speakers etc, for anyone playing through guitar cabs you're better off with a suboctave pedal or a graphic/parametric EQ.
i'm keen, i'll buy a reissue if it's not too expensive, i use a sonic maximizer/subwoofer driver rack to similar effect and it's kinda indispensible once you get used to it. if it's good enough for merzbow it's good enough for me.

Re: DOD Meatbox
The best way to use a meatbox is running the wet signal to a dedicated subwoofer, the second best way would be use a peak limiter. I have an EQD The Warden set up for peak limiting and if does a good job with filters and sub octaves but idk how well it would work with a Meatbox. I'm buying the reissue for surebackwardsvoyager wrote:meatbox = subharmonic generator (blends in 35hz tone and boosts 60hz band)Eivind August wrote:So, what's the difference between the meatbox and the buzz box?

Re: DOD Meatbox
i run subs to a separate mixer channel and mix things so that the other channels leave it a bit of space so it's possible to get away with not having a dedicated subwoofer but for e.g. a band rig using it with bass guitar or whatever that would certainly be ideal. you can make a short scale sound like a goddamn earthquake.
and yeah, some sort of compression/limiting dealio is a good thing to run afterwards regardless, you can get it to sound tighter and pumping almost like sidechaining a kick. sub bass is awesome.

I think I will grab one of these, assuming the price isn't absurd.
