I'm not a big Brand New fan, but I feel like Big Business kind of fits that mold to a T?

I could definitely see that, I actually meant heavy in terms of usage though, like that's the only BN song that sounds that way as opposed to a band based on the concept.

Yea, I'd have to hear something of what's going on to judge whether 'clean' fits.
I played with all sorts of noise projects for a long time and my dirtboxes were *almost always* off.
When in doubt, despite my love of fuzz, I go for clean, sometimes, laughably so.
Rarely without the Space Echo...but...that's not dirt.

Maybe I don't need him to play with dirt. Maybe he just needs to turn the fuck up. Loud ass cleans.

Will be honest, any "normal" dirt tone he could possibly want will be any Boss multi made in the last 20 years - if it's a more recent one, it'll actually probably be decent if tweaked.
I can sound like me with anything from a ME-6 on, providing I want to go pretty aggressive on the gain (which I do).
Just tell him to turn up because you're having a hard time hearing him if nothing else. It's true!

You guys should check out my band sometime. There are a few songs with clean very guitars and grind fuzz bass.
Also, get a ds-1 haha. crank the tone up and feel your bones start to scrape away. Or tell him to get stainless steel strings. OR BOTH.

Loud cleans are always fun. If harsh and hurtful dirt is needed, Holowon Umiom. I keep mine around for the ugliest distortion tones it can do. It also does normal dirt sounds as well, but its ridiculous EQ and gate make for some truly ugly sounds.

I think the Driving Notion is perfect for loud, clangy, trebly, dirty guitar toanz
provided you haven't already flipped it.
What's his amp situation?

Sounds like his amp situation
should be a pair of Twin Reverbs, each sitting atop extension cabs packing 15-inchers, hahahahahahaha

I'm keeping the DN! I haven't gotten it back yet anyways. SUNDAY!
He has a Crate 4x10 and a powerful SS amp. Dunno what exactly. I don't know if it will be able to hang with my YBA-3 + 2x15 setup but we'll see next week.

A Harmonic Percolator might be something to consider as well. It can be bright/harsh. Plus, the sustain that comes from those - even when the dirt is dialed back and it's clean-ish - is unbelievable.

I would love him to sound like Albini.

Nine of swords has a cheap one. No clue if it's good though

Dunno if it fits the budget, but Fredric Effects also has a Harmonic Perc clone:

95 pounds... that's a little more than $140 before shipping...
They also have a clone of the Shin-Ei Unpleasant Companion, which is legendarily harsh:
