That all depends. Is it NOS Altoids? Or full-on vintage Altoids? Because you can't get that vintage Altoids tone with just any aluminum box - oh no, you need THE REAL DEAL.

I feel like the pre-90's altoids had a more curious tone than the reissues.

Fuzzrite v1.
A fickle beast, and alone it's something I would hardly characterize as versatile...kinda 2 trick ponyish (super fuzzy with balls, super fuzzy tinny lofi)
...but it's instant garage & Stooges. And when stacked it into a phaser it gets a gnarly makeover. Especially with manual sweeping...
And using guitar's vol knob doesn't really clean it up...just makes things a little less chaotic. At high input settings the sustain is almost something I'm used to finding in circuits where the signal is more heavily compressed (yes, I mean Muffs).
I have 2 other mainstay fuzzes in the majority of my guitar setups...both 2 transistor-based designs (Ge FuzzFace & Interfax HP) and while there's some overlap between them, I can individually coax out sounds from each one, that justify their continued use....and cost

The Fuzzrite is the least important (out of the 3) to what I'm currently doing with my gear. But I cant help myself and keep going back to it like a fiend. A fuzzfiend.

I think essential non-essential my pedal is the subdecay proteus. Don't use it in any songs, tried to take it off my board, but I just like it on there. Will probably get around to using it one day.
Maybe.

I'm only playing with myself these days (twss), so none of my pedals are really essential

EHX Freeze. Conceptually I love what it does, but rarely feel a need to use it...

I feel like I'm the only one I know who regularly buys Altoids.

Boss PH3 phaser, instant raygun weirdness at many settings. Not really practical for musical puroposes (or musical for practical purposes).

Not a pedal, but I don't use it for anything but bedroom wanking

Most of them are essential even if its just for those specific moments of the set. However my Boss PS-3/PS-2 I am still figuring out what setting to leave them at, so many options.
