Re: Can't You Just Make Every Dirt Pedlol Sound Good???
Makes sense, we also use the eq differently, I might dime the bass but I never dime the treble, both dimed is possibly my least favourite setting on the pedal but yeah Vox style amps can be quite bright (in a good way).
Loose and saggy, middy and honky or lofi is all good with me, generally I don't really like mushy or nasal sounding dirt pedals besides that I can't stand it when a dirt pedal doesn't kick me in the face when I hit my guitar hard, I just need that kick you know and the HM-2 is awesome at that.

Does this mean we are in the wrong place? Maybe we should be posting in the "I Love Fingers" forumWeHuntKings wrote:Yeah, I mean isn't tone just all in the fingers anyway guys?

Yeah, but fingers are really just all in the knuckles, right guys?KaosCill8r wrote:Does this mean we are in the wrong place? Maybe we should be posting in the "I Love Fingers" forumWeHuntKings wrote:Yeah, I mean isn't tone just all in the fingers anyway guys?
I'm just being a dork.
I too cannot seem to use HM-2s. I've had three of them at different times and can never get them to sound cool unless the gain was really low and the eq wasn't dimed. But it just felt wrong to use them that way. Couldn't even get any good black metal tones out of them, everything just turned to mush no matter what I did.
I could probably use my algal bloom for literally anything though.

I dunno there are more than a couple of dirt pedals that I could never be happy with.

HM2 at normal 9v on a PP2 sounded assy, flipped the dipswitch on output#5 & get to 12V & it sounds AWESOME. Running through a modded Bassman Ten & an Ampeg SuperbReverb.

The hm2 calls for a 12v aca supply, I've had mine since 93 and still have original supply. Apparently the hm2 on isolated 9v supplies typically sound like garbage. Daisy chaining works fine as there is some sort of 12v to 9v jumper that activates when the chain is grounded to other pedals.sultanofswig wrote:HM2 at normal 9v on a PP2 sounded assy, flipped the dipswitch on output#5 & get to 12V & it sounds AWESOME. Always ran my HM2 on batteries in the day, what a rebel I was!
Now I've replaced it with its ugly rackmount cousin, the GL-100. HM2 goodness, all analog, with many more options (and dual parametric EQ), and AC-rack-level-headroom in the circuit. You can SLAM the thing and it does what it will do!
That said, I have NEVER gotten a tolerable sound out of a DOD FX55 of any generation.
Those things were meant to be DOORSTOPS, not pedals.

Yep. The old boss adapters were unregulated, so they pumped out 12v which was regulated down to 12 in the pedal. And yes, daisy chaining bypasses the resistor (?) and lets you use 9v.braaandooon wrote:The hm2 calls for a 12v aca supply, I've had mine since 93 and still have original supply. This is how I used to use one, pushing the high gain input on a JCM800-like. It was a good sound, I miss it sometimes. I'd get one again if they were still going for $40 every dayWayToHip wrote:I use my as a dirty boost with the distortion all the way down. Goroth's right, it needs to push a dirty amp. Otherwise, it's a hissy/farty mess.Achtane wrote:I seem incapable of making an HM-2 sound good.

My fauxM-2 works with anything but I don't go for Swedish chainsaw much.
It won't do subtle but it's a very fine oldschool megagain sound.
It lived on my board for years, only to be replaced when the original Dano Fab Tones came out in '96. It did the same sounds of the HM2 but went a little more crisp and slammed the Space Echo in a more pleasing way.

From 0-HM-2 in like a page huh???

Swervedriver...sultanofswig wrote:Impulse-bought a Boss HM2 on ebay & got it just in time for practice last night. HOLY SHIT. Found the sweet spot with the gain around 8 o'clock & the eq knobs both near noon. What a great sound. Swervedriver-esque for sure, even with totally different amps.

I miss my HM-2
I have been getting some nice tones from my LA Metal lately, which is strange because I hated it when I got it.

Yeah the Supra Distortion is truly, truly terrible. The only use for it I could imagine is harsh noise music or like, a part of a song where it sounds like you're playing shitty tabs at Guitar Center.rfurtkamp wrote:
