Holy shit, I know. I picked the worst time of year to do this.

I've gotta do some paint sanding today. Kinda scared.

Also maybe some bags of rice around it in the room it's drying. Will help soak up some of the humidity. Or you can get those crystal containers you put in damp room to soak up moisture and stops mold from forming.

I'd give it another day before sanding. These things take patience. Learned that the hard way myself.

yeah. Im gonna hold off till tomorrow. I cant put it back together till all the parts come in, so no sense rushing things. Could be a week or more.

One with the pickguard for shits and giggles.

Pardon how ridiculously metal those sheets are.

Pfft. It's a beautiful day here in Savannah!

Ok, fine. Maybe it is a bit hot. It is 99 out, and feels like 106. My tires felt like they were going to roll as I was merging onto the highway. The AC in the grocery store was keeping it a nice, comfortable mid-80s temperature. My home AC is set at 78, and can barely keep up. Here's to another $400+ electric bill!

On topic though, nice looking paint on the bass. My wife has a Squier VM Jag SS bass in silver that she loves. Same complaint, though-- J pickup is not really good. I plan on replacing her with a regular 'ol MIM Jazz bass pickup. There is a guy on Ebay (hdcustomguitarsupplyonline) that sells MIM Jazz bass pickups and MIM 60s Jazz bass pickups for under $23 delivered.

Thanks guys. This feels really satisfying so far. This is my first real project like this and I want it to go well. I want to start building pedals and modifying/making instruments, and I think if this goes well, it may boost my confidence and inspire me to try something a little more ambitious.

Skully, it was your 12-string build that inspired me to do this. This isn't nearly as complicated, but still.

I want to try building a bass vi next. I don't know if I want to do it totally from scratch or try to Frankenstein one from different guitars. I'm going to have a perfectly good P pickup leftover from this. I thought it would be cool to use that and another pickup near the bridge, maybe a guitar pickup, and maybe have a jack for each pickup to do a stereo setup, but that may be too much. I'll end up making a thread where I ask a bunch of questions and stuff at some point.

However! In the meantime, this bass is going to sound killer when I'm done. Thanks for recommending the alumitone pickups, skully. I listened to some clips and was pretty blown away. I was only planning on upgrading the bridge pickup but I logged onto talkbass for the first time in like 2 months and found a P pickup for $70 shipped, so I had to jump on it.

Here's hoping tomorrow isn't as humid as today and maybe I can get another coat on this thing. I don't know how many I should do. I went through my first can pretty quick. My base coat may have been to heavy though. I'll try to go lighter on the next one.

Holy shit, I'm rambling. I'll stop now.

edit: Goddammit, Skully. Just found your video with your six string octave bass. Now I need one. Did you come up with the idea?

I think you're doing a great job for your first build/mod!

Glad I was able to inspire

I love alumitones in all of their forms. Sounds stupid, but you can really hear what the instrument is made out of with them.

And yeah, I came up with the idea. It was my wife's bass, and it had been sitting in shambles for a while, so I fixed it up. I actually haven't played it in a while, but it's really fun to play

Man, fuck some people on talkbass.

The guy selling me that P pickup decided to sell to someone else after we agreed on a day and price. So now I'm on the hunt again. Fuckers.

Seriously. Not even a courtesy email. I sent him a message to get his PayPal info and he was just like "sorry man, someone beat you to it."

SERIOUSLY? Someone beat me to it? After you agreed to sell it to me?

Its ok, it's just gonna cost me 40 extra bucks. I want to leave him bad feedback or something.
