a fender type with buckers can go toe to toe on HEAVY but they don't do the gibson mid-puch sound as well unless you make the body out of something more like a gibson: mahogany, limba, walnut, Koa ect.
About the kit/warmoth thing, there is no reason in the world that you have to bolt the neck if the body and neck are a tight fit, the joint on a LP Jr is almost the same as a bolt-on really, you could ask for no neck holes, glue it and then sand the seem to your comfort.

Yeah. I am with this call on the SG. Play a few. For a few years they messed around with how the neck aligned to the front pickup [leaving enough wood to keep the neck strong] but overall the impression from playing an SG is "damn, this is a long neck. 12th fret genuinely feels pretty far up the neck, which is awesome, imho. Not all of them feel like that though. I think it's the 60's tribute from their current production that feels the most like that to me. Are you near a GC, just so you can go in and try some out?
There is also the fender custom shop. There are a few rare birds out there, set neck, gibson stylings on the Tele and Strat tip. Even the Strat-o-sonic which I think is bolt on is pretty "gibson-ed."
After years of playing a Tele and and LP, I'm looking for something in the same space. For me I am currently on the hunt for either a Jag or and SG, depends upon which one shows up first on the used landscape here in PDX.

that one of the perks yeah, it helps a bit when bass is your main instrument and you are over 6' tall

most guitars feel small, one thing I do do is put the strap button about where is is on a SG on most of my guitars

I'm not near a GC, not at all actually:s
So what do I look for in an sg, in terms of specs? I'll play as many of em as I can, but I could use something more to start from.
The '60s tribute is missing one thing that I'm really anal about. If I get shit for saying this, I probably deserve it, but impo a gibson HAS to have neck binding.
I'm obviously also anal about scale lenghts...Wich is why I'd advice you to play that tiny jaguar enough to convince yourself that the string spacing and jangly sustainless tone is really for you:) I'm a fender guy all the way, but I'll take any gibbo over a short scale fender any idea...

Shop the used market for SGs (Standards but I would look at Classics as well, those P90s rock) and just play as many different ones as you can until you find the one.

If you are looking at Vintage, the ones in the 70's had the neck set further into the body. I'm about 90% sure that in the 60's, then 80's and beyond had the same neck/body placement.
I also agree with you on the binding. It's what's kept me from buying the tribute, even though the tribute is really one of the nicest playing guitars I've picked up recently. There is one used at a local shop that I keep coming back to. That being said, dude to Gibson's typically crappy fret dress, binding is almost a requirement.
And yeah, I should have clarified my post. I'm looking for a different sound in the mix than I am currently getting with a busted up Tele or an LP. I actually don't love most LP's as they are muddy and heavy as fuck. I love mine, but it's the only one I've played that I love. That's lead me to looking at the SG or Jag. The SG's I've been looking at are either the Tribute I just mentioned that has P90's, a Classic [P90's], a standard that I'll likely throw lollar P90 for humbuckers into, or there is this other odd used SG Standard that is nearby with zebra pickups that are coil split.
The thing I have found particularly with Gibson is you need to play them. I think you should do it with all guitars, but I am amazed at how "dead" or lifeless some Gibson's can feel. It's not even a "I don't connect with this" kind of thing, it's a "What the fuck happened, oh god I hate this" kind of thing with the bad ones…Oddly enough for most strats or teles the baseline experience is usually pretty decent and then if you are playing a few that are on the wall, there's one or two that really shine, and after a proper set up are pretty amazing.
My Jag lust is a different beast entirely. I want a small fast neck and the voice that only a Jag can do. I just happen to be hunting for both of these guitars at the same time as they will each add something different to the mix…

Well, if you want an SG just get an SG and don't worry about the scale length. I've got an SG Jr I play a lot and it's no trouble switching back and forth to a Strat or a Jazzy - you learn to adjust pretty quickly. If you want a bound neck and humbuckers (P90s are awesome but they're very different to humbuckers) and you're looking at Gibson's current lineup I'd go for the USA SG '61 Reissue:

If you want a vibrola (and don't be scared off - they work really well and add a bit of weight to the body to prevent neck dive), then maybe the SG Original:

Or even the Kirk Douglas SG (although it might be a little too fancy):

I agree 100% on the gibson thing, but I have played plenty of fender I thought where nicely painted firewood.
Really just pick it up and play a E chord… the whole instrument should vibrate and resonate and send off good vibes! you don't even have to plug them in to tell if they are worth your time.

One of my big gripes with buying a new Gibson right now is that stupid fucking Min-e-tune, and you're forced to buy one equipped with it (at a $300 markup) unless you get the SGJ or other lower end models. I know I bitch about Gibson a lot but I'm annoyed with the directions they've taken in the past few years.

Ha! Fair enough. And yes. Good point, the whole thing should resonate and every note should ring clearly.
