Love the first tube sounds.

There's certainly a lot more real tube dirt pedals out there in recent years than there used to be.

I used to really be just the Tube Works/Chandler one (as used by Gilmour and Eric Johnson) and the Radial Tonebone series.

I've noticed that real tube dirt pedals don't hold thier value very well used, so can be had very affordably on ebay second-hand (at least in UK).

There's the Ibanez TK999 Tube King (the discontinued silver one; not the diamond-shaped one!). It was designed by Chandler I believe. The Maxon-branded ROD880 is identical.

Look out for the Nady TD1 (the modern version, not the 80s one). It's discontinued but one might turn up. Brian Wampler regards it very well. It seems to be based on the Radial Tonebone Classic - at least in terms of its controls.

Those Coopersonics sound pretty awesome as well. Just listened to the GMD Valveslapper demo which was pretty good. Tons of gain on tap too it seems

I snagged a Damage Control Liquid Blues for $80 when they were blowing them out over 4 years ago. Ought to get it back out sometime since it gives a very nice clean-ish base tone. The boost switch was fart city, though.

(I have a weird block about using it since it's footprint is about the same as my ZT Lunchbox that I got a bit later. Fucked up a bit since I don't mind putting a lot more total acreage into pedals than amps.)

My Coopersonic? I'll try, some time. Inside I recall it being very, er.. interesting and ...um, rustic(!). Mine is serial no. #131, dated May 2008. The people who design and make it are from the indie band Six by Seven.

Guys, could we stop talking that bullshit with "asume starve voltage because of 9, 12, 18 Volt input" please?! That is not a proper indicator. Most of the tube pedals have internal transormators and run the tubes within normal specs.

No. Wasn't pointed at anyone specific. But that Argument always comes up in discussion about tube based pedals and annoys me quite a bit

the answer is really no. In order to get anything like the tube preamp sounds in an amp you need sufficiently large B+ say 200-400V, and you need proper heater voltage of 6.3V (give or take) at 300 mA. The average power supply you use on your board is just not going to cut that and bam you back at needing a transformer and essentially your back to a preamp.
