Not sure if a pedal would get you close without a lot of tweaking (the overpowering thing).
All these shoe gaze bands and their rack multi-effects are driving me mad! I've heard it's the soft focus setting on some old rack unit but the name escapes me now.

I really like the flanger hoax but it's way too big to be on my board right now. :/

Does anyone know of a pedal that has a chorus, phase, and flanger in it besides the line 6 M series stuff?
Strymon Mobius if you're willing to drop the cash. If you only need those three, probably isn't worth it.

I love the mobius, but it's more than I'll ever need. I only use the modulations for textures and I don't use them that often.

To get back to the original question, I've experimented a shitload and find that I just prefer the ringmod first. Ring-mod -> dirt/fuzz is something I've been doing a lot more of lately.

I like it when I was doing the straight ring mod noise type stuff, but when I tried to utilize the tremolo aspects it just got lost in the wash of sound. I'm hoping that moving it after the fuzz will fix that and also provide some cool sounds for the noisier stuff.

Man, I never liked the way ring mods stack with most fuzzes either way.

I always run ring mod pre-dirt but if i stack it it's with either an OD (mini) or distortion (elements) afterwards to try and accentuate the inharmonics rather than adding more harmonics to the signal and creating a huge mess. Which could be a good thing but to my ears at least, it usually doesn't work. ESPECIALLY if you're using more than one fuzz at a time.

So, yeah, my suggestion is to try many different dirt pedals after the ring mod and find one that gives you the best mix of clarity and madness. The MF-102 is an amazing ring mod so I'm sure you'll find a solution with it :thumb:

edit: but if you're using it as a tremolo pedal disregard all of that and put it at the end of the chain :thumb:

I currently have my RR between fuzzes.
AB-Synth out front and Algal Bloom after.
I also only use it with drones and synths, for some reason I just can't find any guitar tones that I think are actually usable :idk:
But I love it with my Drone Commander!

Oh, yeah my bad, I wasn't even thinking about using super slow ring mod as a trem. That should definitely be after dirt.

If it were me, I'd put it in the bst and get a pedal that's NOT a ring mod. :)

Might happen :( It's hard to get a useful sound out of it, but oh man can I get some crazy noise/feedback.

I have trem before and after dirt, but I use it before more often. It allows you to go a bit more nuts on the depth, and then modulate the gain of your dirt, which is a subtle effect but adds a bit of extra dynamic to the whole modulation thing. I like it.
