Definitely. I have another bass more appropriate for standing gigs, but it was in the shop at the time.

Forgive me if this comes across as rude, but this seems like a bad example of using 7 or 8 string guitars in general because it doesn't seem like you're using the extra strings. I'm pretty confident you could play that material on a normal guitar, but I could easily be incorrect. Don't mistake what I'm saying as an insult because I think that tune is sick nasty and crescent fresh, but I just don't understand the need for the 11 stringed instrument on material like this.

Most bass players don't even use the d and g strings on a standard bass....

I play a 6 string bass and I find I rarely use the C but it's there when I need it and I'd never even consider switching to a 5 or a 4 now. A 4 feels so tiny now, and it's made me want to up to an 8 on guitar.....

I can't disagree with that bass player comment. I'm just a simple guy I guess. I don't need to start adding strings when I'm not getting any better with the 6 I've got now. I loooove seeing dudes going ape nuts with instruments with more strings, but I just thought this particular tune is a bad example of this because it seems like it could be played on a 6 string. As I said, I could be wrong on that very easily. I'm pretty sure he's got some tunes where he goes buck wild with all the strings, though...dude's a killer player, so I have to believe that he does.

I have plenty of songs where I use the lower strings. I just write what I think sounds good - whether it's on one string or all of them.

I've heard this comment a few times in regards to extended range guitarists/bassists - to me, it's like saying to a piano player "you better play all the notes on that!" or wanting someone who has a giant pedalboard to have ALL of their effects on at the SAME time. Like many of you, I have a couple of odd pedals (BitCrusher, Revolver) that I keep on my board and use sparingly, similarly I have a couple of really LOW strings that I use sparingly, but are there when I need them. Hope that doesn't come across rude.

Breaux that too many/not enough strings shit is for TB or TGP. Raise the tone, we're a classy establishment.

I think it's because it's the most obvious application of a lower range, at least to the average guitar-playing listener. Especially after listening to groups like Gojira or Meshuggah.

Well that's the obvious reason they're so frequently used in metal music.

Take backwardsvoyagers post for example, why don't you see any 2-pieces using them for more low end?

Also, keep in mind Jean's approach to the instrument.

Jazz bassist extraordinaire William Parker only plays on a four stringed instrument, but he approaches it like a kit drummer.

The G string's his ride cymbal. The D's his snare. A string's his bass drum and the E is his gong or sub-bass drum.

Sometimes it's a good thing to conceptually understand what you're doing and even musicians who play on instruments with only a few strings tend to favor some of 'em over others.
