The envelope effect is the important ingredient to make it sound like anything but a guitar (of course it's hard to build that into a fuzzbox)
It only sounded cool on a few frets of the guitar but I wonder if putting a compressor in front of the envelope would make it more useable...

I can get a great trumpet attack fuzz by starving the voltage on my BYOC Big Muff.
