Hey Unclegrandfather, that surely is some killer hifi gear, all those headphones...drool...

I have noticed you posts and all the sweet gear you have collected over the years, and I gotta say that I am happy to hear that all that stuff is being used by a professional musician. Do you have any recordings you wanna share? Maybe some of your stuff you can direct our ears towards?

In the process of getting an actual system going.
Using a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon, a Pro-Ject phono preamp, Harmon/Kardon receiver and Paradigm Studio 20 v3s and sub.
Waiting on the preamp and clearing some space for the furniture.

here's a great guide for setting up your speakers in your room according to your rooms dimensions in regards to addressing acoustics.

if those don't suit your room, feel free to pm me. I use that method, but I have dedicated listening rooms where having large speakers 5 feet from the wall behind them and 4 feet from the side walls is no problem. I can get you some other tried and true methods for setting up, like say on the long wall vs. the short, and other hint's i've picked up over the past 13 years.

All of these setup guides are best to be considered as starting points, and you make minor adjustments until you get the speaker to lock-in with the room bass wise, and then you work on "aiming the tweeters at your ears, just past your ears, to a point behind your head, to a point in front of your head.....just until you find the position that "sounds" most natural to you.

pro-tip. when you find a position that sounds great take some masking tape/etc and outline the speaker on the floor. also, symmetry is key

good luck.

 vintage gear of all kinds.
Salvaging vintage HiFi really got me into music ~10 years ago.

I use a Yamaha YP-701 w/AT440MLa.
Secret giant-killer 2ch power amp (class A push-pull cathode-bias design uses any octal tube with compatible pinout) with NOS glass: Mullard 50s ecc82 drive/M8136 PI, TUNG-SOL 5881 powered, RCA 5U4 atm.
PAS-3 modded pre. More Mullard & Telefunken ecc83s, TUNG-SOL 12X4 rectified.
B&W DM5 bookshelf speakers
Scott S-Series floor speakers (forgot which...resemble S-10 and HEAVY)

Edit: 12X4 rectifier (not 6X4)

Finally took the new setup for a spin last night and, man, does it sound great. Just waiting on my IKEA shelving to get my records in the room.
Quite a step up from a Crosley record/cd/cassette/8-track/microwave.

I pretty sure not listening to music is a step up from a Crosley :)

I fucking love vinyl. My record player is an old Authentic from 1971 and I forget which model my stereo/receiver is. The belt's gone, so I might "upgrade" to something a little newer. The best part of my setup would be the custom speakers I got earlier in the year. Ohm-N Acoustics is the name. They sound fucking incredible. My vinyl has never sounded so good.

My collection is primarily composed of grindcore, crust, and powerviolence. A few "unholy" grails in there, but I'll have a list at the end of this post. In a few months, I'll be able to add the first vinyl I've ever recorded/released with a band. I'm fuckin' stoked.

When I move out, my mom/dad will probably give me their records, so that rules. All the oldies are there. Queen, Fleetwood Mac, Michael Jackson's "Off the Wall", Kansas, etc.

Don't feel bad about modest setups. I've listened to some very "high end" setups with thousand dollar cables and 5k cartridges. They are very impressive, but do not meet my requirements. They're too perfect.

I like "the vinyl sound" and "the tube sound" and "the vintage sound" in particular.
The ones that let you hear happy mistakes and the personal surface noise that occurs from regular use.
The imperfections are part of the draw IMO. Things just sound realer that way, I suppose...

I like the coloration of all kinds of gear with "a signature sound" ...specifically middle-of-the-road and even TOTL stuff from the golden age of hifi.

i definitely wouldn't want to listen to music through a studios monitoring set up for pleasure. no thanks.

this is only a pocket change theory, but i think ultra uber high end gooses the 4 to 6khz presence region to give the impression of more detail and a sense of...presence. also because hearing loss is progressive in nature with the higher frequencies, i think builders also aim to boost the 6khz to 18khz to account for their tarket market's hearing. i think a subtle boost in the presence region enhances the listening experience, but certain stereo's i've heard were most def tilted upwards, but only perceptible after some many hours spent listening when i'll notice Everything i play has this coloration...if you will. maybe?

Now that I'm in my room and in front of my record player, here's the setup:
NEC Authentic AUP-7000FE (record player)
Yamaha A17 (amplifier)
Ohm-N Acoustics Custom Speakers

I need a new belt for the Authentic or a new record player. We'll see how things play out.
