re: shoegaze effects/pedals.
I'm afraid one needs quite a lot of different effects. Essentials: are fuzzy distortion; reverb; and some kind of modulation (tremolo, chorus)
If you don't have many pedals at present, I strongly suggest you get a Line M5 (amazing value!), or consider a Line M9 instead.
For a shoegaze pedal board, I'd want the following pedals types:
overdrive
distortion (a Rat of some kind; or Shredmaster; or HM2)
fuzz
EQ
tremolo
phaser
chorus
delay
reverb
