I just put thicker guage strings on my guitar. It def helped me out in that department. My playing just "feels" heavy now.

true, because again - what would Boris do? A lot of their stuff sounds very "70' psychedelic" to me, but played slow, tuned down and very fuzzy, it's so fucking heavy
and a lot of doom bands are slowed down Sabbath anyway
In my opinion, heavy is a lot more about attitude than anything else

I'm with getting the right feeling to it. Just enter the rehearsal room and blast/rip/shred/smash the shit out of everything.
Tell Your amp that, then kick off the jams and the feeling should catch and make You move to the music. NO You don't have to jump around, and make Immortal poses. But if one just plays sitting or standing in there and plays the fretboard around without the urge to kick that chair in the air, the br00tz and music isn't happening, just song riff or technique practice
and that's NOT the feeling You should get out of the br00tz, right.

^take Sepultura for example. Yeah, it doesn't matter if Max presented the first song as Mass Hippy-noses,
the audience catched the feeling. Because the band was 100% behind what they were playing that day, becoming the music. Fucking awesome.

Well before the break in at my house where my only and most beloved guitar was stolen, I was starting to get little by little more brutal. Thing that helped me best is tritones, disjointed time signatures, and slighter angrier disposition. Since the burglary I've been a lot more pissed so once I can afford a guitar again, things will get heavy.
