Well I do want an 8 or 12 string, because they sound more natural than using a POG.
But I'd probably still use it like a 4 stringer.

Cover songs. Not original, and with GH out nowadays, I ask, what am I DOING!
Play a Gibson/Epi Les Paul. I find the tone way to hard to change, it still ALWAYS sounds like a Les Paul. And it's too freakin heavy!
NO metal, no Country, no Indie.
And honestly, I can't playing fucking acoustic! I have NO idea why! I just HATE it! I don't mind listening to it (not all the time) but I can't play it! I don't even like fakeass acoustic pedals. the tone and all that jazz, just.... GAH!

I'm pretty open...I listen to damn near every type of rock music and dig guitars of many shapes (though I am partial to teles or V's)
Maybe 8 string guitars. 7 I can see...but 8 is going to far. I've even seen a 9 string before
Jazz dudes can pull it off. Metal its just sorta " lulz look how low I tune for teh brootalz"

I agree with the les paul thing. I like the non-traditional les pauls like the jr's where they're just slabs of wood with a p-90. The weight of the traditional paul hurts my back after awhile.... and I can't jump around.

I love Juniors, but they're still so damn expensive!

I absolutely refuse to play covers.
other than that, I tend to stick to garage/punk stuff... i can't seem to stay focused on anything else.

I was lucky to find a decent red 99' epiphone jr. Hoever it's always at my girlfriend's house =/ so I don't play it too often.
As far as cover songs, I'm fine with playing them. I just hate it when people play smells like teen spirit, or a song that pretty much made the original band famous. I like to see thought put into cover songs. I'm more of a "Jesus don't want me for a sunbeam" kind of guy.

Highschool ruined it for me as far as covers go. When I'd take my guitar... people would always be like "hey can you play this?!" and it really used to bug the hell out of me (teen spirit being one of the most requested.) So I built a dislike to trying to learn people's songs. ....but hey, if you're going to play the rarities, then props for not being a jukebox !

devi ever wrote:Everytime I ever tried to start a musical project in High School, it always degraded into playing cover songs... even after high school. I don't know if it was something in the water, but I swear I never ran into a single group of musicians growing up that were able to get through a jam / writing session with out busting out into a cover song.
I know exactly how you feel, that's currently what I'm going through. I had been hooked up with this amazing jazz drummer, but as soon as we get something good going... I have to move.

Plus I come from a very small town, so there's no outlet for 'experimental' stuff. Phoenix isn't really looking that great as far as the band scene goes either...

It's weird, I live in a small town and I know of 10 bands here that make original music. The only problem is there is no place for anyone to record.

Bummer dude, but how are people supposed to find the place when you're not at liberty to say where it is?

Ha, i know who you feel. I brought a guitar to a retreat once in high school and these two girls (note: not my type, annoying) were asking me if i knew how to play all fo these songs..... one after another I had to say no. The next day I ended up playing streetlight manifesto's "As the footsteps die out forever" and since the chord progression was the same I squeezed in 99 red balloons' intro verse at the end, then went back to the last chorus of the song. Everyone was singing 99 red balloons afterwards.

I don't really care if people find the place, it's a shithole anyway.

I don't mind covers as long as the band doesn't have that “gotta sound just like the original” mentality.
Some of the greatest Recordings were covers, Santana, Hendrix etc. and lets face it, Elvis only did covers.
In the Jazz world they are known as “standards”.
