Eh. Early Isis and early Neurosis (who are, for all intents and purposes, identical to early Isis) definitely have links to hardcore and punk, especially when you look at bands like Amebix and the whole Crust scene.
If you're talking about, say, the Bad Brains, then I can see where you're coming from.

In the documentary Blood, Sweat and Vinyl one of the members of Neurosis talks about how Amebix, Black Flag and Void were all big influences on their sound and aesthetic.

Oh man that's one I've been meaning to watch, that's the Neurot/Hydrahead/Ipecac(?) docu, right?
Yes. And it's right here.

That's the one! I just watched it a few days ago. I'm new to a lot of those bands (I know, I know). Really gives you a picture of the fluidity of those bands and labels.

Fear Before The March Of Flames
Pianos Become the Teeth
I think those two would fit in here and haven't been mentioned yet

Can't say I have any bands to add that haven't been mentioned, but I do love this thread.
And thanks to the cool mf'er for posting that Blood Sweat and Vinyl doc. I had remembered hearing about it but never looking it up. I'll watch it soon.

I was thinking of mentioning Pianos Become the Teeth but I haven't listened to them much. Need to do that.

I'm really digging the newish crop of post-hardcore bands. Guys like Pianos Become The Teeth, Defeater, Balance and Composure, and Touche Amore.
I got to see Touche Amore open for Hot Water Music last year at the Glasshouse and I was blown away by their energy.

I'm definitely not going to argue with you on that one, as I'm not an authority on either early Isis or early Neurosis, as I'm not really a fan of either one's early stuff. I've tried and just can't get into any Isis before Oceanic, or any Neurosis before Times of Grace
