What sound quality things? I've had two and they sounded noticeably different but both great.

Nothing specific; just subjective opinions about it's sound character I guess. I know it gets progressively lower fidelity in the longer decay times, but lo-fi is cool with me. Just seems that with those specs and that price, it should come more highly recommended, There's gotta be a catch (but I hope there isn't).

The Deluxe Memory Boy is where I've been leaning because FX loop and routable expression (and mod and tap and 1500ms analog delay time) for less than $200 is dope! However, I've heard mixed things about the overall sound quality/character. I see a lot of regular Memory Boys here in the pedalboard thread. Is it as good as it looks on paper? I'd probably use it on bass and baritone mostly.

I have nothing but positive opinions on the DMB. I love the way it sounds, and the feature set is ridiculous. In the nature of full disclosure, I am selling one right now, but not because I didn't love it. I'm only selling it because I found the features I cared about the most and have now moved back to a simpler delay with just those features I want and nothing else.

Yeah my bandmate has a DMB, and it's AWESOME. The repeats do get the lo-fi thing happening, but they're very musical. With the exp pedal out, tap tempo, and the features it has, a bit of a no-brainer for the cost. We use a LOT of fuzz, so the subtle tone difference between the DMB and something more boutique-y is probably lost on us cavemen.
I'm about to flip a few things and will probably pick one up myself...

Yo duder. I've had a few of the pedals mentioned here.

MLJr - what I have now. sounds good. Has everything you want, everything I want. Cheaper than some of the other options. I heard you can find them cheapest (around $200) on tgp so I went there and found one in like 2 days. The modulation is awesome but there's no speed control. It's not really for pitch shifting, wobbly stuff and rather to add spookiness to the delay. Really cool. The tap divide stuff is really handy, I use it a lot. No oscillation though. :( but one tap mode can do that pitchy shifty stuff when you turn the time knob. But I'm feeling getting a cheapo delay in the future for some real oscillation. Maybe like a carbon copy so I wouldn't worry about tap either. Also I've emailed diamond about getting an fx loop put in there and they said it is possible! So there's that too. UNLIMITED TEXTURES

Supa-Puss - if you're wanting ambient stuff, this is a no go. It is super analog. And by that I mean it was finicky. It had it's own personality and definitely sounded different. I wanted some longer trails on it and the supa puss got these weird (but cool!) analogy sounds like at the end of Karma Police. That's what its long trails sounded like. And it was pretty airy and floaty and had fun oscillation, modulation, gain circuit, and weird modes. I only had it for a month or two.

El Cap - It's like the full featured MLJr but for tape. It was really nice. I got rid of it for something cheaper, less knobs to worry about. Fun modes and TAPE CRINKLE. But it was kinda airy and floaty. Really good at long trails. But I like delays that hold the low end well and keep it spooky through out. The diamond is great at that, as would many others, but a tape and a mind of its own analog delay didnt hold it up well. Even though the el cap had a lows knob, it just made it thinner, to me.

I've been led to believe that the answer is yes. They all use the same BBD chip for the delay circuit. So unless there is some sort of different EQing going on, they should sound the same. They are all the same basic delay pedal, just with different feature sets.

another for the deluxe memory boy. they sound great, and the modulation is awesome. it's 9-volt powered, though it does take up a bit of space on the board.

Thanks for the headsup! Just to clarify, does the MLJr oscillate when you have highish feedback and you move around the delay time while there's sound going on? because that's really all I want oscillation wise.

I'm pretty sure there's a local music store that stocks the memory boy deluxe so I'll have to just try it out for myself!

It gets bendy spacey sounds, but it doesn't feedback upon itself. So it never builds a big loud oscillation, just a spaceship noise from the delay time changing. Even with the repeats maxed.
And its only on the newest version. But I think the newest version is still a year or so old.

Where are you getting that number? I saw 700ms on the EHX site :idk:

and with prymaxe's deals, you can get it under 200 if i'm not mistaken

How's the Wampler do with fuzz?

The knob goes to 700ms, but you can tap it in as slow as 1500 at the cost of some audio fidelity. There's videos of it on youtube.

aside from the tap tempo that you wanted, the deluxe pitch pirate does all of those things i feel like
i'm a little in love with mine at the moment

personally i was looking for some to replace my memory boy and i've found it.
anywho, just my 2 cents

I used to have a normal pitch pirate, but I didn't like it with my bass :idk:
I'd love to try one though.
I'm not really finding anything that completely does everything I want in a delay, so I'm thinking about keeping my Nova to do standard stuff and looking for a smaller delay pedal to do weird stuff, specifically modulation with at least depth and speed, ability to self oscillate, 9v power. Either that or I could go custom. Still lots to think about. Thanks for the input everyone.
At this point feel free to talk about whatever delays you think are really worth a shit
