I have another muff variant coming to me, so I'll try that in the mix too...
I really think the delay suggestions have merit, as a subtle immediate echo effect on each distorted note may help to widen the distortion granulars a bit, make it more bouldery, less gravely, I guess.

That is very interesting to describe distortion as boulders and gravel. I like that. The first thought that came to my mind was the rat. The megalith can be pretty fizzled capable of making boulders into gravel.

Yeah... I guess analogies and metaphors are most useful when 'writing' about sound.
I think of it this way, in terms of grain size = dirt effect:
Distortion = boulders > rocks > gravel
Drive = gravel > sand
Fuzz = sand > dust > vapor
How much of what type of dirt you apply, and at what frequencies is what makes up the flavors of dirt effects. ie, Muffs offer a lot of mid-scooped fuzz...
That's how I wrap my head around it, I guess...

some of my favorite fuzz sounds are like a wall of molten hot needles melting my face off leaving me a hollow shell which can only be filled with primitive sounds of fuzz.

Recently acquired a bass setup and started running through my pedals to see what would/could work. My Elements and Mini Fuck definitely made the cut.

Skully has a demo on the Tubes (search for seriously special twosome) but dunno if it's a bass or not. I could have sworn there was one.
I own one...and play bass...and.....yes. God yes. GOD YESSSSSSSS it's good as hell. Had the regular Twosome and wished so bad I could stack 'em and the SST delivers. Heavy ass fuzz. HEAVY ASS.

I have just a normal plain ol Rat on my board and it sounds great on my bass. it gets pretty heavy if you put the distortion past noon and play hard.

One happy byproduct of searching for a distortion sound using available fuzz pedals is that I found a few downright evil fuzzy sounds.
Parallel blending the Unpleasant Surprise with the TFR is just sick (or totally lame, depending on settings).... So much (or too much) saturation. Adding the B3K to that cranks the midrange and produces a full range, over the top, yet (mostly) articulate distortion. Kicking on the Faye Sing, set to manual, and things get very polyphonically harmonic.
Yeah, I made up a word, so what...
If the TFR had more mid-range in addition to low-end (can't really do both at the same time with this pedal), then I may get to where I want to go. The muff variant waiting for me at the post office is supposed to have more mids, so I'll see how that compares. In the mean time, mixing the Divided Octave's green ringer with the B3K gets me pretty close to the sound I have in mind, but not there....
More experiments... and the search for 'hard edged' (not fuzzy or honky) distortion continues...

This might be a controversial suggestion but, have you tried a Digitech Death Metal on bass? It sounds like the end of the world.
