ekseption is another great band to check out. I agree with most of what has been said here, Rush sucks period, i dislike everything about them. The only remotely good song by them is Working Man (slow edit) on youtube.

I would suggest these bands (adding to the list):

Yes
ELP
The Nice
Ekseption
Aphrodite's Child
Nektar
Frank Zappa (start by listening to the album "Hot Rats" all the way through)

Also the band "Epitaph" their biggest record is "Outside the Law" which was recorded in Chicago. Awesome album all the way through.

Also, some people call "Pink Floyd" progressive rock. I disagree, I would say that they are psychedelic rock. What do you guys think?

I pretty much dig all the music mentioned in this thread.

Meh, I started putting in YT clips but there is too much progressive stuff I dig and this post got waaay epic. Take any genre, bend the structures and rules a bit and you've got progressive. If I'm going to be a genre whore I guess I mostly listen to progressive takes on the following genres metal/death/doom/grind and a bit of progressive thrash (no, not an oxymoron!) every now and again.
I listen to knucklehead thrash and death and big band jazz to cleanse my ears when things get too much.

+ Dark Axel knows his shit. listen to the music in his sig.

awww you :) thanks

btw i kinda agree with you... i consider music to be progressive even if it takes some genre and just puts some twist on it... the harmony doesn't have to be crazy complicated, but if you play with the melodies around it and work with it in a DIFFERENT way than usual, that is enough for me to be considered progressive.

I think Floyd was psychedelic up until Meddle. Echoes was definitely progressive, and then the next few albums I'd consider prog.

but not the 80's stuff. That wasn't progressive

Echoes is two tracks with all kinds of goey Echorec goodness (and one with seagulls) and three or four mellow acoustic jams. Fearless is fantastic, and the important thing is that the floyd were, and are, tremendously awesome.

that said, I've already mistaken one psych band for a group of proggers, so maybe my meter's gone all funny.
good deals are here.

Oddland. Check out their new album The Treachery of Senses.

Have I ever mentioned I have a habit of doing what I call "Music Math"?

Anyway,
