Danelectros's. Get yourself a used DC, U2 or really any body shape with lipstick pu's and you won't be disappointed. I have a DC bass and that thing plays and sounds better than some of the higher end basses I have tried.

go a little bit more expensive and the Epiphone gold-top Les Pauls with P90s are great little guitars, much more consistent in my experience than other similarly-priced Epis.

Hijacking this thread, what's the deal on cheap basses? Are the Squier basses as good as the Squier VM guitars are right now?

The ones I've played are but my favorite inexpensive bass is a T-40. But they getting more and more expensive.

Edited to include basses in this thread! I just played an old aria pro II bass the other day and it rocked. I don't think they're very expensive either...it had p and j pickups and an ultra fast, slinky neck with a jazzy feel. Very 80s looking, but in a good way.

The VM and Classic Vibe Squier basses have a pretty good rep. I like my SX from Rondo having replaced the pickups, but the Squiers are less likely to require any work. Old American-made Peaveys can also be found for cheaps all day long if you don't mind not-quite-standard body shapes.

Yeah, I keep hearing about the Peavey T-40, but without any really good local guitar shops to get one through, it's gonna be hard to find one (versus just ordering a new Squier bass..)
That said, I try to buy used/vintage when I can, to stop buying cheap crap imported from China and elsewhere.. it's destroying the environment and making it harder for people to build instruments here. Sorry, didn't mean to lecture, just trying to explain my reserve against ordering a new guitar versus finding a used/vintage one..

Yeah, I totally agree with mathias. But the shit thing now is that people think anything pre-90's is vintage and demand high prices.

Plus one for lovers of the Peavey T series instruments. Great slabs those. Keep an eye out on Craigslist Mathias, they're out there.

I think my favorite cheap guitars are those weird torchered things you find here and there... like.. the coolest guitar at GC yesterday was this mockingbird... that someone stuck a dean neck on.. but got the neck length was wrong.. so they filled in the bridge post holes.. and moved back the bridge... then covered the thing in silver glittery paint... it looked like a craft-store and a BC Rich crashed into each other
