Man, go listen to Defective Epitaph, that album is so good. If you like the murky black metal stuff that makes you want to put on corpse paint and feel sad then you should like it!

I love that early Xasthur stuff, but Epitaph should not be overlooked in my opinion.

Some more recommendations:
Oranssi Pazuzu - Muukalainen Puhuu (Their split with Candy Cane is awesome too) // Psychedelic Black Metal

Cobalt - Gin // Blackened Avant-War Metal (Yeah, you fucking heard me)

Wolves in the Throne Room - Black Cascade // Post Black Metal

Drudkh - Eternal Turn Of The Wheel // Post Black Metal (I've heard them called Black Folk Metal with Crust or something, but I don't think that classification fits perfectly)

Miserere Luminis (Gris/Sombes Forêts) - Miserere Luminis // Post Black Metal (Or Progressive Black Metal / Shoegaze I suppose)

Just got into Cultes Des Ghoules. Not bad, pretty raging stuff. Longer—including a one-track, 25-minute EP—and generally slower songs than your average black metal blastfest, but I like that.

Ride for Revenge have been getting a lot of playtime recently, too. I mean, what's not to love about bass guitar-centric slow black/death metal? Remotely reminiscent of Horse Latitudes, but less doomy.

[a big edit]
Bl00, Spacey... where are You guys?
This used to be our playground, and we came up with a ton of good shit (and a bit of the usual debate over the genre definitions

) :
http://ilovefuzz.com/viewtopic.php?f=150&t=13829&hilit=black+metallet's go, here's what I can come up with witout getting up from chair ...
proto black metal pioneers:
Venom
Hellhammer
Celtic Frost
Bathory
Mercyful Fate, because King inspired and worked so much harder than many others
the rest, ever since late eighties:
Beherit
Archgoat
Enochian Crescent
(the True) Black Dawn
Behexen
Thyrane
Abruptum
Funeral Mist
Watain
Dissection
Arckanum
Tiamat
Mayhem
Dark Throne
Isengard
Storm
Gorgoroth
Ulver
Satyricon
Samael
Root
Behemoth
Blasphemy
Rotting Christ
Necromantia
Deathspell Omega
Merrimack
Sarcofago
...the first two releases by Sepultura
Von
Havohej
Nunslaughter
...and sometimes I feel early American satanic Death Metal qualifies close enough
What, post-black metal?Gylve.
If You have to ask, You'll never understand.

That record would be a lot better were it not for the production. I didn't you could get more lofi than Xasthur already was.

havo-fucking-hej!

guys were there in just the right time, together with over the top antichristian Morbid Angel, Deicide, and Nocturnus of those days... they really caught my attention for a moment.
But isn't it funny how black metal turned out to be SO European thing when the satanic bands in the States went on with the antichristian death metal?

It's a different kind of lofi. I dunno, I am totally in the minority and I know it.

It's a good record but it's hard for me to listen to. Which I guess is the point.

I've been dying to get stuck into this thread for days to check out the stuff that's been posted. Got my first dog on Friday though and have barely managed 5 mins in t'internet since then. She's a handful but an absolute sweetheart! Will hopefully get to check it out this week though.
Massive Xasthur fan although I thought the last album was absolute shite. The couple before were decent enough but definitely not his best. Any recommendations for that shoegazey "depressive" black metal would be appreciated.
Also was on a huge Burzum buzz a few months back. For some reaon I had never gotten around to listening to Hvis lyset tar oss until then. Seriously underrated album!! Amazing that he apparently recorded those first 4 albums in around 2 years because they really do sound quite different.
Actually looking forward to going to work in the morning so I can listen to some Burzum on the way

Not to self promote, but I started a black metal project specifically centered around gauzing called Llihje....
Another project that I can think of that pulls it off is Crooked Necks:

Also Circle of Ouroboros can sometimes too
