Smart man. I see the VT22s for cheaper than V4s constantly.
But you're right, basement apartment and VT22 (or V4, or probably even V2) don't match real well. Them's gigging amps.

Hmm, maybe I'll see if I can snag the VT-22 for cheap then. It looks really clean in the ad, and it says that it's been recently serviced, so if it's got new caps and tubes I'd think it would be a pretty good deal if I can get it for less than $600. It's definitely way more amp than I need right now, but I'll hopefully be moving in the next year or so and be able to be louder. And I'll still have my Mesa DC-2 for low wattage use.
The main reason I'm intrigued by the VT-22 is that I'm looking to get a bass soon, and I'd like to have an amp that will work for both guitar and bass. I know that the open-backed cab of the VT-22 wouldn't be optimal for bass, but it should be a hell of a lot better than my DC-2 or Deluxe Reverb.

VT22s in these parts usually go in the $500 range for a good example...if it's really clean, all that work has been done
and been done by a good tech, and the speakers are good, then it's probably worth close to $600.
If you really want to use it for both gtr and bass tho, I'd hold out for a head--they're still common and (usually) reasonable enough--or buy/build a headshell for it so you can swap the amp chassis out and use a real cab. Your back (and your bass tone) will thank you for it...

$600-650 seems to be the going rate these days. I paid $450 for mine 4 years ago, give or take.
VT22s are cool, but kinda stupid, because they weigh so much, and if you have cabs anyway... fuck it.
But don't the the master volume model. Hold out and find a non-master one. You'll be glad you did. When that volume knob gets up around 2 o'clock, you'll understand. They are incredible amps. 7027s aren't terribly hard to come by, if you need replacements. There are JJs and Sovteks around. I bought a set as soon as I got mine, so I'd have backups (mine came with the Magnavox originals, and only just now shit the bed).
I'd also stash away $200 in a sock drawer for maintenance, because things WILL go wrong with it. Maybe not right away, but they will. That's the rub, it seems with V4s. Prone to little issues here and there, but they sound so good, it's worth it.
And careful with your back, because they are the heaviest fucking amps in the world. No joke.

or you can convert to running KT88's. Im running 2 KT88s in my Ampeg V2. NO pin mods necessary just a good re-biasing.

I just got my seller to move on his super clean early 70s V4, non-master volume. He'd only deal in the late 70s until this very moment.
Finally!
$650, fuck it, done deal.

And Schnikes...sick! You'll love it

my Vt40 has 7027's and the V2 has the Kt88's. the Kt88s just sounded beefier. Like the amp has more girth. The clean head room is awesome when ran at 8ohms.
I might switch the Vt40 over to KT88s too.

Yes, I might have to try this in my V2...yes.
