Those diodes aren't anything special, but they're what the circuit is based around. Does that make them special? IDK? This wouldn't be the only case where a run of the mill part dictates other component choices. Sometimes designers find something that works out well for some unknown reason and to change it affects everything else adversely. Layout changes do, however, affect sonics. Urmm... can you give me your evidence for layout affecting tone? Im sorry I just don't buy it, there's no reason it should, other than what I said about tiny amounts of capacitance, which I doubt any of us can pick up on except when they produce oscillation. You can't just state it as out right truth.
No the old PCB would not fit a smaller enclosure, I mean the circuit would, the circuit will fit a 1590B with a bit of difficulty or a 125B Easily.
Yeah, I don't necessarily believe everything he says (or even most of it).
I don't have any evidence as far as layout affecting tone. That's fine that you don't buy it, but I've heard it from a few different sources. You're right, I can't state it as an outright fact. I've no proof to back it up. As I'm sure you know more about electronics than I do, I'll defer to your experience.

i don't really buy any of that hype, mojo talk, golden ears bullshit or layout affecting teh toanz.
just me though.
i do understand that there are minute differences in sound that are exactly that - different. tough to say that one is better than another when you get down to such subtleties.

At least I think I will try the new one out. Compare it to a lube reamer and And Aardvarks and some others.
...though usually, if it's low gain, I might just not be interested. Unless it's rusty, edgy, and crunchy sort of low gain ripping my ears, boosting and tightening the fuzz. Uh!

Pricing isn't finalized but it's cheaper than old Klon...
wouldn't be surprised if it was more than $200 though

To be a reasonable price, it needs to be under $200. It just doesn't have the controls to justify a higher price, and if they're just using plain boxes now, there's nothing special about it at all.
The Klon circuit was a bit more complex than a Tubescreamer, but putting it on a PCB isn't any harder, and at that point it's not more complicated than a Big Muff.
Still, if it's under $300 (I think-- I don't really know what Klons cost originally), it'll be an improvement, but they need to do something pretty special with the circuit to justify a higher price.
Being an overdrive doesn't automatically make circuits worthy of being more expensive.
But, alas, I'm not who they're marketing to, sooooo.

Before it was all Bill.
Now it's Bill+Outside Builders+Dealers all taking a cut.
Used prices should be reasonable though.

I love how on the page for that there's a whole section saying the klon is shit and overpriced
