Re: lowest gain OD
In thinking about possible solutions and I was like Hmmm what amp(s) is he playing into?
Then I realized I don't know if you are guitar or bass and what tuning you're at.
In my experience it's easier to coax different levels of drive out of a guitar amp where you have to hit some bass amps over the head with a hammer.

whoops, shoulda mentioned that. Right now I'm playing an IB John Lennon Casino into a mid 70's master volume Super Reverb. The other main pedals in my chain currently are a DD-6, RV-7, Carbon Copy, and a PS-6.

Re: lowest gain OD
Have you given any thought to jumping the channels?
You could interrupt the jumper with a passive a/b pedal or a tuner mute or just a DIY foot switchable disconnect?
Then you could also vary the preamp tube on the switchable channel with a random variety of 12ax7's hi-gain, microphonic, salvaged from a record player, ham fest etc etc.
On channel one of my v4 I have a 12ax7 that's solid and firm and channel 2 has a 12ax7LPS
!!!!! I just realize in typing this that I need to see if this is my solution for my SVT!!!
I haven't tried that in 10years!!
Thank you!
BTW running stereo into a fender or Ampeg is awesome!!

Re: lowest gain OD
I've been getting some potentially good tones with a DOD 250, but I just blew a tube last night, so I'll have to wait until I get my amp back before I get more conclusive results. I think what I really need to fit the bill is some type of dirty-ish boost. The LTD certainly has my attention, part of my problem with previous pedals has also been my inability to find a good setting with the tone knob. It always sounds slightly different then when it's off. Even at noon, there would be some tonal difference, so I'd really like a low gain od without a tone knob. Perhaps individual bass and treble pots, but then i could just be asking for more of what I don't want.

Re: lowest gain OD
Fuck od is the best dirty boost and there's no tone knob just a high cut (which I always leave off). In low gain settings it's like your regular guitar sound but a bit thicker and better. I agree about tone knobs, I pretty much always fucking hate them. I especially seem to hate Fulltone's tone controls which always sound muffled to me.
But based on what you're sayin, I really think a fuck overdrive would fit the bill.

If you want really low gain od, might you just want a boost?

Re: lowest gain OD
i was thinking of going with a boost, and in fact probably will add an lpb-1 to stack with the fuck od. my problem with clean boosts has always been that by the time i find a usable dirty tone, the boost has already pushed the overall volume of the amp way too high. Ive looked at some boosts that have both gain and master level controls, but it's more common to find this configuration in an od pedal.

Re: lowest gain OD
Xotic RC Booster is exactly that...still low gain at the highest gain setting. Nice EQ section too.

FYI. I've preferred boosters lately to overdrives.

I'm not sure how I'd feel about having bass and treble controls as opposed to just a tone knob. don't know if it would hurt or help. in any case, I've got a fuck od, an lpb-1 clone, and a forest green compressor all comin. my board gon' be lookin like a plate of skittles before the end of te year, hopefully it sounds like one too.

There's a Singing Tree in B/S/T right now... I would say the ST is the definition of low-gain OD.
ILF pedals: DE Eye of God, Mellowtone Wolf Computer, Mellowtone Singing Tree LE, Fuzzhugger Arc Flash Oscillator, DSc Miniberator, Mysterious J boost/cut/tremolo pedal
