yooo i love weird tunings. i post this link every time this thread comes up.
http://www.sonicyouth.com/mustang/tab/tuning.html
also if you give a shit about scales and chords and orienting yourself and shit, try guitar pro. it'll show you scale graphs and chords for any tuning if you just press a. (assuming you've set the tuning first)

Re: who rocks crazy altered tunings?
the Fripp tuning is interesting, but with my normal, light gauge-strings I always use, it's impossible to make it sound right. If I ever had another electric, I would try it out.

Lately I've mostly been playing in DADGAD.
I also like Carl Kress's tuning, BbFDGAD.
Before that I was playing in EADF#BE for awhile.

after playing in standard tuning for 22 years, i've been using C-G-D-G-C-D exclusively in a new band i'm playing with. embarrassingly, i found it on a Sonic Youth website. it works for me, though.

F#-F#-B-B-D-D anyone? what's yer favorite tuning of pain? hey, you plain ol' open tuners are welcome, too.
Hey, I think I used to have my guitar in this for over a year! Or at least the two F#s are awfully familiar. It was the tuning Sonic Youth used on Kool Thing and a number of others. I also did the "Brother James" tuning for a while and liked it maybe even a little better. Can't remember it right off, but I believe it starts off GG at least.
I also saw what you mentioned about Lee's pedalboard and I agree...when I lived in NYC from 1995-2000, I went to see his various side projects anytime I had a chance, so I was able to get pretty familiar with his board. I haven't seen them live in years at this point, but I love that the one guy with the website that documents all their gear goes out and gets fresh pics pretty much anytime they tour.

Re: who rocks crazy altered tunings?
I think we have one of these threads come up every couple of months.
Personally, my guitars are almost always in one of the following tunings:
standard drop-D
one whole step down from that (CGCFAD)
Placebo tuning (FA#D#G#CC)
And when I want to get all dissonant, I use what I like to call the "Root" tuning, because it's based on that sick-sounding chord from Deftones' "Root" (EA#D#GBE)
My basses are always in either ADAGD or CCGCG (DADG or CGCG for my 4-string)

Oh man. I have to try the BADDAD.
I pretty much always keep my acoustic in some sort of DADGAD. Cept 1 or two steps down depending on the day.
