Hmm. That makes sense, but I find more in the songs than that I guess.
Do songs really have to do anything?

Demdike Stare - Tryptych
Frank Turner - England Keep My Bones
Jason Isbell - Here We Rest
Liturgy - Aesthethica
Meth Drinker - S/T, Beastwars - S/T (local sludge and stoner rock acts respectively)
Mountain Goats - All Eternals Deck
PJ Harvey - Let England Shake
Police Teeth - Awesomer Than The Devil
SubRosa - No Help For The Mighty One
Today is the Day - Pain is a Warning
Tom Waits - Bad As Me
U.S. Christmas - The Valley Path
Witch Mountain - South of Salem
The weedeater has been growing on me after being initally a bit disappointing, murder the mountains is in a similar category. Haven't given the Rwake a listen yet, but looking forward to it. Same with Ken Mode... way too much to listen to.
Also some great stoner shit by the numbers from Dopethrone, Elder, Megachurch.

Re: favorite records of 2011?
I thought King of Limbs was so cold and unfeeling...And not in a good way. The sounds they were dabbling with did NOT evoke any strong emotions or images. At best, it is good background music that you don't have to focus on.
I thought the new Crystal Stilts album was pretty great. Sounded like the Velvet Underground in a cave.
Mamiffer's Mare Descendrii was incredible. We Speak In The Dark has got to be one of the most beautiful songs I have heard in a long, long time...Aaron Turner's guitar stylings (very UN-metal on this) against the sweeping and slow piano with that wordless singing from Faith = perfection.
Thurston Moore's solo album Demolished thoughts was equally beautiful. Fans of Nick Drake would approve...Lush strings and strange open tuned acoustic musings with cryptic, anxious lyrics. The album just became even more interesting considering he and Kim Gordon just called it quits a few weeks ago...

Fucked up had a great album this year
also...
Japandroids (this year I think)
Wolf parade expo
The National high violet
The Kills
Wooden sky
Black Keys (big muffing the hell out of it)
Even Sam Roberts killed it this year.
I really liked The Heart Pills' release. They have an interesting sound that is best described as familiar but unique. They aren't afraid to take traditional rock riffs to new weird places....loving it. To Paul from Dad.

HLYSHT, that was this year wasnt it? I worked on that project for so long, it feels like I started it about ten thousand years ago.
