You can try bandmix.com. You put in your zipcode and find people close to you. I was in Charlotte for a year before I posted up there, got three calls right away. First one was really promising. They were my age, had wives and kids, into Thin Lizzy and Fugazi (nice mix) and busted out a joint, and they really rocked. It was too perfect: We had a fun time and a good jam but they didn't call me back. Then I got a call from another dude, he had tunes and was also from the northeast. We were singing pretty tight harmonies right away, first time I've ever jammed with someone else who could sing well. The catch is...I don't really like the dude. Like, I don't really enjoy his company. I'm 35, he's 45 and still thinks he's gonna "make it" which just isn't on my radar. Very salesman-ish. I don't know he just rubs me the wrong way. Great example of boneheadedness: "You know, Pete, I really respect you. I mean you got this disease (I got multiple sclerosis but am in remission) and it's gonna kill you. I mean, you JUST KNOW it's gonna be the end of you, but you keep going." MS doesn't fucking kill you moron, why would you even say that?

My big influences are Barkmarket, Shellac. His favorite band is Styx. STYX! Then he said he likes some of the "new stuff" like (God this hurts) Nickelback  . But with each week that passes it's harder for me to just walk away because I got nothing else going on and it's coming together musically in a way that I wouldn't expect. The songs he writes don't sound like any of the awful bands he mentions. We are reaching an area that I guess is closest to the only two bands that we kinda have in common, Alice In Chains and King's X. That's ok with me, and I'm on my bass using the Algal Bloom frequently, with sexy results. But as soon as we're done jamming every Monday I practically push him out the door.

But yeah, brother, I understand you gotta play with others. Bandmix.com. Good luck.

Bandmix.com is already really promising. Found a guy with an album out that pretty much matches my listening tastes / influences perfectly. Now to build up my playing chops based on what I hear in his album, and try to impress him.. :thumb:

Edit: Gah, damn. Bandmix.com wants $10 just so that I can email this guy. The worst part is, he used a username, not his real name, so I can't find any other profiles or sites online for him. If he had a website, I could figure out some way to get in touch with him. He has a Bandcamp, but there's no contact form to get in touch with him through that, only a way to email Bandcamp about music sales / customer service.

What do I do? Don't want to drop $10 for one email :(

It can't be $10 just for one email.
I'm sure that gives you access to email other members and setup your own profile as well.
Besides even if you only jam with the guy one time, that couple hours of entertainment is worth it.
Or you could use the $10 as an excuse for not being able to contact the guy.
Maybe you and your $10 can jam together? That sounds like fun. :)

Nah, it's $10/month to be able to use the site to contact folks.

My problem is that our budget is tight enough as it is, without having an additional monthly subscription. :idk:

Oh yeah forgot about that, but I just put my email address on the front page and let people come to me. It took exactly no time whatsoever. Paying the 10 bucks lets you go in the chatroom and all that, but I don't see the benefit so I didn't bother.

Just put your email on your front page and list exactly what you want. Don't list your influences as "anything and everything" because no one will know what you're about and won't waste their time. If you look at someone's page, that person will see that you were looking and email you directly if they're interested. Here's my page as an example http://www.bandmix.com/peter-kay/. It'll work.

Yeah, I just went on there yesterday and found somebody with really similar influences/ideas and he just had his email on the profile page. Still waiting to hear back, but like I said, this was under 24 hours ago.

Find some punks that can riff it up at shows where wankers won't be.

Milwaukee has lots of good bands.

Recent favorites:
Drugs Dragons
Party By The Slice

It's also where I saw an "IfIhadahifi" sticker and spent the rest of the night trying to figure out what is was called when a word was spelled the same forward and backward.

HAHAHAHA! AWESOME.

How about I replace that self doubt with hours of practice until I jam with the guy? :thumb:

I ordered two more books with Amazon Prime, so we'll see if those help..

mauerkraut wrote:Yeah it can be tough. Just got out to shows and meet people. Always be open to opportunities, you'll never know where it leads you. You won't find a drummer at home. Craigslist has very, very few diamonds in the rough you'll find who are on the same page. It can happen though. The important things is to use all the tools available to you.

Says the guy whos in a band with this guy who can't hold down a fucking drummer.
