So, do I go mosrite or ashbass? I'm thinking about getting the maestro, too. Fuck it.

Well...
Mosrite is vintage, harder to find, more expensive, not true bypass, but totally awesome
Ashbass is a clone, from what I've heard it sounds pretty good, easily avaialble, cheaper
But kosta's right, drop jerms a note and get one of his. He has more original Fuzzrites than I do too, so has lots to base it on.
There are other clones of course. (Didn't stanimal have some up here a while back?)

Fuzzrite is really compressed, buzzy, and has a unique bloom to it.
The Maestro is sheer vintage garage buzz -- listen to old Janis Joplin for the Maestro rasp.

I've actually met the man behind the black angels fuzz sound Christian Bland on two occasions. He's a really cool guy. Here's a shot of his board with the maestro on it:

His main fuzzes are an old 60's fuzz face, black russian muff, and a reissue Maestro FZ-1. Pretty sure the sound you're looking for is the maestro. He always runs his wah after fuzz. He always uses a reissue twin reverb. Uses mostly Rickenbacker guitars these days...also uses one of those john lennon epihone casinos.

UPDATE:

I cop'd a Jerms Fuzzrite (thanks for the heads up Dev), it's currently on it's way from Jim (he switched out the trannies to some NOS ones for me). Clips when it arrives.

I'm STILL on the look out for a Maestro...I want to try them both.
