anyone know anything about the egnater rebel 20? got any comparisons for it? i need something with a nice clean tone.

I fail to understand why most of this forum has amps from Sunn and various other niche or other smaller brands.
It's almost like we're all non-conformists.

I feel like it's because we know the tone we have will be like no one else's?

Or, we just know the secret:
They're better. :|

we had the whole line when I worked at GC. all the rebels have a digital reverb but you would never know it. they do it to keep the size, weight, cost down. the 20 is different than the 30 in style and voice. the clean tone isn't going to be all that loud compared to other 20 watt tube amps. one good thing about this amp is the blender from EL84 to 6L6. really gives you a lot of control to get close to all sorts of sounds. the 20w to 2w switch is a joke and sounds like 20w 15w. thats a cool little combo that will go anywhere and do anything.

i'll bet if you tried the Roost and a cabinet with different speakers you'd be able to get a more crisp, articulate sound from it as well. old JBLs would be the shit.

that's why i have my Laney VC30...it's cheap, loud ($500 used), has low-frequency Celestion greenbacks, and sounds like a Marshall 18-watt with Top Boost. if i was up to my tits in cash i'd probably play Hiwatts so i could finally get that Live at Leeds sound.

The VC 30 sounds every bit as good if not better than the VHT and the old Matchless.

I did a blog a while back where we compared the laney to the sovtek mig and a few other marshall clones. it was a learning experience. a more modern marshall ripoff is the peavey windsor 100 head. its pretty badass for $300 on ebay.

really, i'm amazed at how good the Laney is. when i went to the Gretsch Roundup last fall there were people there with all kinds of TGP-level amps--Victorias, new Gretsch Playboys, vintage Gibsons and Fenders--and when i listened to the recordings later i thought my amp sounded better than any of them.

i have a chance to pick up a hot rod deluxe for $300...is that a decent deal if i throw a new speaker in it?

Yes, but it depends on how mutch the speaker is, no if it's a $300 Celestion yes if its anythign else.

not sure what i'd get for a speaker...would it be a better decision to get say, a deluxe reverb RI?

from my experience the fender blues deluxe and hot rod deluxe do not need a speaker upgrade. they are a pretty good package as they come. I would not recommend to upgrade the speaker (but other tastes ma differ though).
So yeah, deluxe reverb sounds a lot better to my ears.

You think I should just add a 2x12 into the mix? Sounds tempting. You think that would be good or should I make the amp into a head and make a 4x12 with the orangebacks and two JBL's cross wise..? Not that I'd do that anytime soon, but just to know...
